A Facebook user, Foday Massaquio, claimed that 90% of Liberians do not have access to safe drinking water. Massaquio is the chairperson of the Opposition Congress for Democratic Change Council of Patriots (CDC-COP).
The claim generated 11 comments and 23 likes as of the last time we checked.
Also on May 28, 2026, Massaquio claimed that 97% of the population lacks access to safe drinking water.
Given the inconsistency of Massaquio’s claims, DUBAWA decided to conduct a fact-check of the claim as part of its mandate to counter misinformation and disinformation and to promote truth-telling in public discourse.

Our researcher first contacted the claimant to provide the source of his information, but he has since refused to respond to inquiries.
The researcher reviewed the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) 2022 Population and Housing Census Report, which revealed that about 70% of households have access to safe drinking water.
The researcher also reviewed the latest report of the WHO, UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme.
According to the report, about 78.8% of the country’s population has access to safe drinking water.
Conclusion
Based on data from LISGIS and JMP, the claim about percentage of Liberians with access to potable water is false.
