Claim: A TikTok user shared a clip and claimed Dangote has been detained over a scandalous financial statement he made in a broadcast.

Verdict: False. No credible news outlet reported the alleged detainment of Dangote. Furthermore, careful analysis shows that the video was edited, and the original version shows Dangote officially announcing the launch of education initiatives to finance over a million students in Nigeria.

With several foreign exchange platforms gaining popularity among the Nigerian public, fierce competition has arisen among owners to attract customers through advertising.
In a related development, a TikTok user @otunba12026 shared an alleged Punch publication reporting that Nigerian business mogul Aliko Dangote has been detained over a financial scandal he divulged via a live broadcast.
In the clip, Dangote reveals that while elites have been earning from undisclosed financial avenues, the average Nigerian works virtually all day and witnesses his income lose value. He attributed the situation to severe economic constraints.
He then disclosed what he called an “opportunity” which has been made available for Nigerians. He said Nigerians can invest and earn a humongous amount of money by simply trading through a financial market system.
“For too long, elites have been earning from resources and financial instruments, while ordinary Nigerians work ten to 12 hours a day and watch their income lose value… Everything is becoming expensive…Today I speak openly. Access to this opportunity is available to everyone. By investing just N430,000, you can connect to a system that automatically trades in financial markets without your constant involvement… And if you do not earn at least N790,000 in the first week, the bank will refund you up to N2,185,000,” Dangote allegedly stated.
As of Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, the post has garnered 3,122 likes, 87 comments, 490 bookmarks, and 2,911 shares.
While other TikTok users pointed out that the clip was generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI), some wanted more details about the alleged scheme.
“AI-generated video,” Adam Ali Adam, commented.
“A professional fake news, this is so distracting,” Mastersensephotography pointed out.
“Please, which platform are you talking about?” Akwasen John inquired.
“Can I have a link to the link?” Emma22 asked.
Following comments suggesting the video is AI-generated, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.
Verification
We conducted a keyword search for Dangote’s alleged detention and found that no news outlet, including Punch, published any information about it.
We took a screengrab of the clip and subjected it to Google Reverse Image Search. It linked us to a similar clip uploaded to YouTube in December 2025. In the video, Dangote pledged a N100 billion annual education fund to support 1,300,000 students in Nigeria.
The Newsroom Ng reported the development, noting that the programme aims to expand access to education and foster academic excellence across Nigeria.
We submitted the clip to Truthscan, which rated it “fake” with 89% AI content.

We also submitted the clip to DETECTVIDEOAI, and it rated it as having possible AI smoothing/synthetic appearance at 58 per cent.

Conclusion
DUBAWA’s findings show that the video is an edited copy of Dangote’s public address pledging financial support to over a million students in Nigeria. Therefore, the claim is false.
