Claim: A Facebook user, @Onyee Arangee, claimed Donald Trump is interested in Nigeria’s upcoming elections and has promised to ensure President Bola Tinubu is not re-elected.

Verdict: False. There is no proof that the United States President has made such a statement or shown interest in Nigeria’s elections.

Nigeria’s next general elections will occur in 2027, barring unforeseen circumstances, and political parties have already begun preparations. Campaigns will unfold both online and offline as parties and their supporters seek to win the hearts of citizens and secure votes at the polls.
Alongside these efforts, disinformation will likely play a role, as social media users push different narratives to influence opinions. In previous election cycles, DUBAWA exposed fabricated political endorsements attributed to former President Obasanjo and debunked false claims that President Tinubu lost four southwestern states in 2023, when he lost only two.
In line with the topic of elections, a Facebook user, @Onyee Arangee, claimed that the president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has expressed interest in Nigeria’s upcoming election.
The claim appeared in a three-minute video in which a man said, “The news that reached my desk this morning is that Donald Trump is interested in Nigeria’s election. They said Donald Trump does not like our president, and he says he will do everything he can to remove him from his seat.”
Throughout the video, the man repeated that Trump does not like Tinubu and argued that Westerners are the ones who control Nigerian politics.
When the post was seen on Sept. 9, 2025, it had 5,500 likes, 325 comments, 446 shares, and 25,000 views.
The comment section contained a variety of perspectives on the topic.
@Aminu Rogo, for instance, stated: “He has no power to do that. Only Nigerians have the power to elect their president through the power of their votes. If Nigerians, through the ballot boxes, re-elect Tinubu, Trump has no power to interfere in our sovereignty.”
Another user, @Archibong Umoren, added: “Tell Donald Trump that we are in Nigeria; we are not Americans. His people in America have been complaining about his administration. Tell him to leave us alone; we are an independent country.”
@Abdroheem Idris replied, “Do you think Trump likes how Tinubu removed subsidies? The Western world and its Nigerian alliances benefit more from paying subsidies.”
We also noted @Ganiyu Sunmonu’s comment: “Trump doesn’t like Tinubu because all the SATANIC moves he has been making to penetrate Nigeria are being turned down by Tinubu.”
The weight of the claim and the attention it drew made it necessary for DUBAWA to verify.
Verification
As expected, reputable news platforms would have reported Trump’s statement. We searched for an update or trending report but found none.
A review of Trump’s public statements and political activities shows his focus has been on immigration policies, economic debates, and ongoing legal battles in America. Apart from issues involving Nigerian illegal immigrants in the U.S., he has not mentioned Nigeria or its elections.
This is also not the first time Trump has been drawn into Nigeria’s political conversations through false claims. A doctored video once circulated online suggested he spoke about President Tinubu’s administration, but DUBAWA’s checks showed it was an old NBC interview that had been manipulated.
Conclusion
DUBAWA found no evidence backing the claim that Trump is interested in Nigeria’s political affairs. Therefore, the claim is false.
