Saheed Aderinto does not have a Twitter account.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Full Text<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Nigerian creatives typically perform well in global scenes like Saheed Aderinto, a Professor of African history and African diaspora studies at the Florida International University, recently did.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">On February 28, 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=10228771176880439&amp;id=1118179423&amp;mibextid=Nif5oz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he went on his Facebook account to announce<\/a> his clinching of the prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/dandavidprize.org\/winners\/saheed-aderinto\/?fbclid=IwAR0R6HRv6dqGZVi_7DIWrtM0P6vwcpDzGTPllqP2VWnroGQiRHul1xduUIY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dan David prize<\/a> of $300,000, equivalent to N220 million. Mr Aderinto is the first Nigerian to win the award.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Soon after, his achievement attracted the attention of social media users, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/abikedabiri\/status\/1635351343639437316?t=U5ZDz-EaGwaL8WsZYgWFTg&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chairperson Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa<\/a> (@abikedabiri), who celebrated Mr Aderinto on Twitter. Congratulatory messages from prominent Nigerians and the international community soon followed this.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Amongst the congratulatory messages were those of Peter Obi and President-elect Bola Tinubu. In the messages sent by Mr Obi and Mr Tinubu, they praised Mr Aderinto for clinching the $300,000 prize, making Africans proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">To ridicule Tinubu and project Obi, a parody Twitter user named \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElluP01?t=iFe0AexZk9GIPe3YHk74LQ&amp;s=09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saheed Aderinto (@Aderinto0)<\/a>\u201d quoted the congratulatory messages of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterObi\/status\/1634916356092227585?t=gtSXsjN9Lr6b6U9NJvMcDA&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mr Obi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/officialABAT\/status\/1635302819338285060?t=zSss-7y-E3iuxQMmbOUOsg&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mr Tinubu<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The parody account retweeted Obi&#8217;s congratulatory message addressing him as his President-elect while he urged Tinubu to allow the mandate of the people to prevail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">He retweeted Tinubu&#8217;s congratulatory post on March 13, 2023, while that of Obi was retweeted a day earlier, on March 12, 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">As of March 14, 2023, the post on Tinubu had been retweeted over 13,000 with over 27,000 likes, while Obi has over&nbsp; 23,000 likes and 5,665 retweets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/KAmYq5mtRHYRdum4JUvQzeDqBMEzxLApX2wt-Ce1NzWT7Y4UXqA_UUkQA7m_K5n5zm7PWGMzFq1gsty1Cn3tfu41u2_gDoNEoFl3DddinnWiZDvG3ExV5Eyvp11pONPQv1krKgdR0VGTKKin3N3NtGY\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshots of both Twitter posts by @Aderinto.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">In the comments section for the retweet of Obi&#8217;s post,&nbsp; some users became cynical about the credibility of Mr Aderinto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">A Twitter handle <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FabunmiAdeyemi\/status\/1635305394393477121?t=UD6nbhx5_gcEC5qySzxylw&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@FabunmiAdeyemi<\/a> wrote, &#8220;I am very sure that you will not win this award if you write like this, someone that came third in an election is your own President-elect. Anyway, I celebrate with you and congratulate you on the award.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Another Twitter user, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amhussle\/status\/1635301152328908800?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mouthpies @amhussle<\/a>, wrote, &#8220;Prof can&#8217;t afford blue tick yet won $300,000.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another user, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VictorIsrael_\/status\/1635313860805804033?t=mkK3KHgwSvhPfwBbXmG2Uw&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chlorpheniramine #OBIdients (@VictorIsrael)<\/a>, said, &#8220;e choke! Our search showed that the posts had been trending as over 2,000 engagements as of March 14, 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The post was also spotted on WhatsApp groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/vm.tiktok.com\/ZMYurXBDa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=DbUXS31E65k&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">At the moment, Nigerians are still divided over the outcome of the presidential election as opposition parties have begun challenging the result. Therefore, considering the virality of the post and the consequences of the claims, DUBAWA deemed it necessary to verify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">A quick search of the name Saheed Aderinto on Twitter showed various mentions. DUBAWA navigated to the account name Saheed Aderinto writing under (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ellup01?s=21&amp;t=ddOyCV3mPsN6icXVMn2BYQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aderinto0<\/a>). She <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AderonkeW\/status\/1635377029804875778?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alleged<\/a> the person behind the parody account is one Iteola Akinpelu Oladele, calling on security operatives @OfficialDSSG to wade into the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Reacting to the several comments calling him out, the person <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ParodyElluP\/status\/1635332961733332995?t=rBm6S-1Cnl82uHxEXuV_-Q&amp;s=08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responded<\/a> that nobody cares if the account is a parody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">He wrote, &#8220;They said it&#8217;s a parody account. Who cares?? Pls Return that stolen Mandate ASAP.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">He <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ParodyElluP\/status\/1635347086299516929?t=GIFO1A22V9LG9h_nhmUiQw&amp;s=08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a> a follow-up taunting the people calling him out and challenging them to go to court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They said my name is not Saheed Aderinto. If you are not satisfied with it, Go to Court!!!&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">He subsequently made another <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElluP01\/status\/1635348763341631491?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweet<\/a>, confirming his account to be a parody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">A check on <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=10228857186390623&amp;id=1118179423&amp;mibextid=Nif5oz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aderinto&#8217;s Facebook page<\/a> showed that he knows the Twitter post and has disassociated himself from the account.
