Full Text<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A Twitter user, Chuxton<\/a>, claims<\/a> a video in which some children are seen happily hopping onto a sleeping and defenceless elephant took place in Port Harcourt in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the May 11, 2023 post, the claimant  said the elephant entered a village in \u201cPort Harcourt Creeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen the villagers ran away, he went and drank all 200 litres of local brew (Ogogoro) meant for sale, which belonged to a man named Tony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We now have a bad market and a drunken sleeping elephant,\u201d Chuxton<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data available on the social media platform showed the post had been retweeted 306 times, quoted 71 times, liked 498 times, and viewed 115,978 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours later, a Facebook user<\/a> shared a screenshot of the post from Chuxton with a call to Nigerians to invest in wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe know this did happen in Port Harcourt. But don\u2019t you think we need to invest in our wildlife?\u201d the post reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considering the huge engagement of the post on Twitter and Facebook, DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In probing the claim, DUBAWA first reviewed news reports on the subject matter and conducted a keyword search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results of a Google search conducted by DUBAWA showed the video had earlier been shared on YouTube. See here<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a> and here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although these YouTubers confirmed the story’s substance that the elephant drank 200 litres of local brew, they claimed it took place in DR Congo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The YouTube channel, Polycarpfrance5802<\/a>, said, \u201cDRC children enjoying a big elephant went drunk after the invasion to human settlements and local brew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another YouTube channel, TaifaxMedia<\/a>, also wrote, \u201cDrunk Elephant in DRC after taking 200L of Local Brew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
