Also, four cows had died of anthrax in one of the suburbs of the same region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-anthrax-disease\"><strong>What is Anthrax disease?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/anthrax\/fact_sheet.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Anthrax disease<\/strong><\/a>, also known as malignant pustule or woolsorters&#8217; disease, is a serious illness caused by exposure to Bacillus anthracis bacteria. The bacteria resides in the soil and affects both domestic and wild animals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats, among others, can become infected when they breathe in or ingest spores in contaminated soil, plants, or water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayo Clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/anthrax\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20356203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>explains<\/strong><\/a> that human beings can be infected through direct contact with sick animals (affected by Bacillus anthracis).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Also, a person can contract Anthrax disease through exposure to products from infected animals, for instance, wool or hides. Hence, the argument is that some people are at higher risk of contracting the anthrax disease than others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">These are people who work in farms\/livestock; researchers and lab workers who study the bacteria; wool mill\/tannery, and slaughterhouse workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mode of transmission and symptoms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Typical symptoms include skin sores, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting and shock. However, the symptoms of this disease are peculiar to the mode of transmission. These are cutaneous, inhalation, ingestion\/gastrointestinal, and injection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/37557#symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Cutaneous<\/strong><\/a> (contact with skin): The bacteria can come in through a cut or abrasion on the skin. The infected person may develop small itchy blisters which resemble an insect bite. It further develops into a painless swollen sore with a black centre, and there could be swelling in nearby lymph glands and tissue. It has been characterised as the most common but is only fatal in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/anthrax\/basics\/types\/index.html#:~:text=Cutaneous%20anthrax%20is%20the%20most,person%20can%20develop%20cutaneous%20anthrax.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>about 20 per cent<\/strong><\/a> of cases.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/anthrax\/fact_sheet.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Inhalation<\/strong>:<\/a> A person may breathe in anthrax spores. This is said to be the most dangerous though less common. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/epidemiology-fact-sheets\/anthrax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/a> include sore throat, mild fever, muscle aches, fatigue, chest discomfort, coughing, nausea and vomiting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cold-and-flu\/what-is-anthrax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ingestion\/Gastrointestinal<\/strong><\/a> anthrax: Humans can ingest anthrax by eating or drinking something contaminated by anthrax spores. This could be through eating the undercooked meat of infected animals. Symptoms include fever, chills; swelling in the neck or glands and painful swallowing; nausea, loss of appetite, and vomiting, which may be bloody; bloody diarrhoea; headache; stomachache.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/37557#tests_and_diagnosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Injection anthrax<\/strong><\/a>: this is said to be very rare and affects people who inject illegal substances, particularly heroin. Symptoms are abscesses in and around the injection site, blisters and bumps around the injection site, fever, and a swollen sore near the injection site. If it worsens, it can progress into meningitis, organ failure and shock.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disease is considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/anthrax\/fact_sheet.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>non-contagious<\/strong><\/a> as it cannot pass from one individual to another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prevention<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">As a means of prevention, the Federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/businessday.ng\/news\/article\/fg-rallies-states-on-livestock-vaccination-as-anthrax-disease-breakout-in-ghana-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>called<\/strong><\/a> for vaccinating animals at risk.
