{"id":15298,"date":"2023-06-30T09:26:05","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T08:26:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/?p=15298"},"modified":"2023-06-30T09:48:48","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T08:48:48","slug":"baba-aisha-sellers-of-harmful-concoction-off-the-streets-after-nafdacs-crackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/baba-aisha-sellers-of-harmful-concoction-off-the-streets-after-nafdacs-crackdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Baba Aisha: Sellers of harmful concoction off the streets after NAFDAC\u2019s crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Many Baba Aisha herbal concoction sellers have stopped selling it on the streets of Abuja.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Local concoction \u2018Baba Aisha Herbal Medicine\u2019 retailers have either taken off the streets or discontinued the product&#8217;s sales, a recent survey by DUBAWA and PREMIUM TIMES shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">This development follows efforts by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nafdac.gov.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/Files\/Resources\/Regulations\/HERBAL_REGULATIONS\/Herbal-Medicine-and-Related-Products-Advertisement-Regulations-2019.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control<\/a>&nbsp;(NAFDAC) since we published an&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/investigation-baba-aisha-nigerias-fake-doctor-cashing-out-on-deadly-concoction-that-cures-nothing\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investigation<\/a>&nbsp;which exposed the harmful nature of the concoction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">In one of its several responses, NAFDAC said it had commenced a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/top-news\/605418-baba-aisha-nafdac-commences-nationwide-mop-up-of-harmful-concoction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nationwide mop-up<\/a>&nbsp;of the toxic concoction, mostly circulating in Abuja and adjoining states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">In making the announcement at a press conference recently, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, a professor of Pharmaceutics and Manufacturing, said the effort would extend to other fake and unregistered products in circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the exercise was to ensure the herbal product, whose registration number expired over three years ago, is off the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have commenced a nationwide mop-up of the Sacra Herbs in circulation. Even if you go (they\u2019ll) only say your children need drip or add them blood,\u201d the producer, Baba Aisha, said in the recorded ad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">According to NAFDAC\u2019s Herbal Medicine and Related Products Advertisement Regulations gazetted in 2021, the advert should be approved by the agency before use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">NAFDAC has since clarified that it did not approve the use of the advert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">All sellers of herbal products in areas we visited have since stopped playing the hitherto popular advert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">While some have totally stopped playing any advert, a few have switched to other ads, also advertising herbal products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We could not ascertain if any of these adverts were approved by NAFDAC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&#8217;s next?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s been 19 days since the publication of the investigation and 15 days since the producer&#8217;s arrest; questions continue to be raised about the next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, the agency promised to conduct its&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/baba-aisha-nafdac-launches-probe-after-dubawas-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigation&nbsp;and make its findings public but is yet to revert to<\/a> this promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Following the publication, NAFDAC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecable.ng\/nafdac-raids-baban-aisha-local-herbal-medicine-factory-seizes-equipment\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raided<\/a>&nbsp;the building where the concoction is being produced, confiscated several items and arrested two people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, the producer was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/top-news\/604783-just-in-nafdac-confirms-arrest-of-baba-aishas-producer-after-premium-times-investigation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrested and detained<\/a>&nbsp;after visiting NAFDAC\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">NAFDAC is yet to give an update on the arrest.
