{"id":15319,"date":"2023-06-30T15:14:34","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T14:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/?p=15319"},"modified":"2023-06-30T15:14:37","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T14:14:37","slug":"dubawas-baba-aisha-investigation-wins-globalfact10-award-for-highest-impact-fact-check","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/dubawas-baba-aisha-investigation-wins-globalfact10-award-for-highest-impact-fact-check\/","title":{"rendered":"DUBAWA\u2019s Baba Aisha investigation wins GlobalFact10 Award for highest impact fact-check"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The global fact-checking community, judged Thursday, June 30th, in Seoul, South Korea, DUBAWA\u2019s investigation on the famous low-market medicinal brew, \u2018Baba Aisha Herbal Medicine,\u2019 as the winner for the 2023 highest impact fact-check entry at its annual summit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/qOqUnCpXYbGpdRhv6c6_Wz-6kdyl_Latv-gu0O2MP2iE0FH3wOg3B5VS56o11Xb-H-F7tUDTJvugHRirlB4TLA7oSv5cZyzhupiU47Zo3WPwxQuzeZq3MnbxHR8a2GGSNGjhecohP_4_emy_-VPMEDQ\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image of the award.\u00a0Photo Credit: Caroline Anipah.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">This was announced at the GlobalFact10, the yearly conclave of the over 100-member community officially known as the International Fact-Checking Network [IFCN].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">DUBAWA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/investigation-baba-aisha-nigerias-fake-doctor-cashing-out-on-deadly-concoction-that-cures-nothing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigation<\/a> titled \u201cBaba Aisha, Nigeria\u2019s \u2018fake doctor\u2019 cashing out on deadly concoction that cures nothing,\u201d competed against four nominees in the highest impact fact-check category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The nominees for the highest impact fact-check were; DUBAWA&nbsp; (Nigeria), AFP Fact-Checking (France\/USA), Myth Detector (Georgia), and Taiwan FactCheck Center (Taiwan).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the impact of the investigation was the <a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/baba-aisha-nafdac-launches-probe-after-dubawas-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">probe<\/a> into the product, sealing of the factory, <a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/baba-aisha-nafdac-commences-nationwide-mop-up-of-harmful-concoction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mopping up<\/a> of the products from the streets, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/nafdac-arrests-detains-producer-of-baba-aisha-after-dubawas-investigation\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrest<\/a> of the said doctor by the regulatory agency, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The reporter of the investigative story, which took five months to put together, Kemi Busari, said his greatest accomplishment as a journalist is to make an impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am glad our team won this award. It is a testament to the fact that people worldwide appreciate the little work we do in our closet, and we hope to continue to do more impactful fact-checking that will change people&#8217;s lives in Nigeria and West Africa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would like to state that the first award for us and me as journalists is the impact we can drive with this story and the positive changes we can effect in people&#8217;s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Busari also recognised the efforts of the control agency NAFDAC since the investigation was published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince we published this, the authorities have lived up to expectation in some ways, and we hope that we can fully bring the culprit to book and sanitise our society of harmful concoctions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) is housed at the Poynter Institute, In Miami, Florida, United States. It was launched in 2015 to bring together the growing community of fact-checkers around the world and advocates of factual information in the global fight against misinformation.
