This is so disgusting and disturbing\u2026\u201d A disgruntled Bamijaiye Kolade Michael <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02ixdLdfVcaQ4xgLxLAsKzbEgyL88BkuaLNprzpEWBiPy3xwCW7w9u73PaePJpcmpJl&amp;id=100083329843303&amp;sfnsn=scwspwa&amp;mibextid=6aamW6&amp;_rdc=1&amp;_rdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the sensitivity of the claim, and the strained ties between Niger and ECOWAS, DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">We conducted a keyword search related to the details of the claim and found out that the post was reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gistmania.com\/talk\/topic,571860.0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gist Mania<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kemifilani.ng\/news\/mali-threatens-to-invade-abuja-if-ecowas-deploy-military-in-niger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kemi Filani News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsnownigeria.ng\/mali-threatens-to-invade-abuja-if-ecowas-deploys-military-in-niger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">News Now Nigeria (NNNG)<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/region\/manzekay\/BREAKING-Mali-Leader-Assimi-Goita-Threatens-To-Invade-Abuja-Of-ECOWAS-Deploy-Military-in-Niger-131756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ghana Web<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nairaland.com\/7815145\/mali-threatens-invade-abuja-ecowas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nairaland Forum<\/a> has gone in the way of the lot but has taken the post down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">However, what was noticeable about the reports (although they all carried the same version of the story) was that all claimed the Malian military leader made the threat while \u201caddressing the press recently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">We searched for the press addresses that Colonel Goita had done recently, and we found related stories published by American-based <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/15\/africa\/putin-addresses-niger-coup-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cable News Network (CNN)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tribuneonlineng.com\/malis-military-leader-confirms-call-with-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nigerian Tribune<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/von.gov.ng\/niger-coup-malian-president-putin-on-phone-conversation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voice of Nigeria (VON)<\/a>. The reports showed the Colonel confirmed that he indeed had a phone call with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, where the latter had pushed for the establishment of peace in a politically-disturbed Niger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">We also came across a news story by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islamchannel.tv\/blog-posts\/niger-signs-an-official-defense-pact-with-mali-and-burkina-faso-and-warns-ecowas-that-an-attack-will-be-no-walk-in-the-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Islam Chan<\/a>nel informing of Niger\u2019s greenlight to neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso countries to intervene with their military forces within its national territories per adventure of an external invasion. According to the report, this is in reaction to the meeting held by ECOWAS in Ghana, declaring a combined force on the ground, ready to fall upon the Tchiani-led military junta&nbsp; \u201cwhenever the order is given\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">We looked closely at other credible news outlets about the development to see if there was any point in the joint declaration that Colonel Goita spoke of moving a counter-invasion on Nigeria\u2019s state capital, Abuja.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">International news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/niger-allows-mali-burkina-faso-troops-enter-its-territory-case-attack-2023-08-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters<\/a> detailed its account of a similar story.
