Dis\/misinformation actors use different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/tactics-of-disinformation_508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strategies<\/a> to influence people and stir them to action to achieve their aims.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">One popular strategy is using the names of prominent people with a reputation, like political leaders, religious leaders, and scholars, to convince the public. Presidents of different countries have found their names in such content and will continue to do so as long these actors try to give their agenda credibility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some notable times that the name of Nigeria\u2019s president, Bola Tinubu, was found in mis\/disinforming content to convince the public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tinubu giving out swearing-in celebration fund<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of President Bola Tinubu&#8217;s ceremony in May 2023, a WhatsApp message went viral claiming the president was dolling out N20,000 to Nigerians to thank them for voting for him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">We<a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/false-tinubu-not-giving-n20000-as-swearing-in-celebration-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> found this to be false<\/a> because the link attached to the message for redeeming the price led to a website showing different characteristics likened to that of Ponzi schemes or fraudulent websites. The presidency also distanced itself from the said fund.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Tinubu reduces NYSC allowance<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Months after President Tinubu\u2019s inauguration, the screenshot of a news report claiming that he had reduced the monthly allowance received by corp members in the country from <a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/buhari-approves-n33000-allowance-for-nysc-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N33,000<\/a> during the previous administration in 2020 to N25,000 went viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We <a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/altered-news-images-about-tinubus-nysc-allowance-reduction-trends-on-whatsapp\/\">discovered<\/a> that the viral image had the watermark \u201cbreakyourownnews.com,\u201d which indicates a <a href=\"https:\/\/breakyourownnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> where users can alter a news article for mischievous purposes. Also, a close look at the president&#8217;s inaugural speech showed no mention or reference to allowance reduction for corp members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Tinubu suspends court over fear of disqualification<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">In the follow-up of the general election, which President Bola Tinubu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/585443-breaking-inec-declares-apcs-bola-tinubu-winner-of-nigerias-presidential-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won<\/a>, the candidates of the People\u2019s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, expressed dissatisfaction with the electoral process and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/600013-just-in-court-orders-merger-of-atiku-obi-apms-petitions-challenging-tinubus-victory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contested<\/a> the verdict of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">While this case was with the election tribunal pending judgment, the Facebook page of an online magazine, Igbotimesmagazine, <a href=\"https:\/\/igbotimesmagazine.monster\/2023\/07\/26\/presidential-candidate-tinubu-announces-suspension-of-all-courts-in-nigeria-citing-fear-of-disqualification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shared<\/a> an article alleging that President Bola Tinubu had ordered the suspension of all courts in charge of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) over fear of his disqualification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">However,<a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/false-tinubu-did-not-suspend-courts-over-disqualification-fear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> our findings revealed<\/a> this was false as no credible news outlet reported it. The online magazine had also been <a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/false-obasanjo-did-not-storm-inec-collation-centre-in-abuja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notorious for sharing false and misleading reports around elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Tinubu\u2019s plans to abolish the Naira for Dollars<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">In Sept. 2023, a video showing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arise.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arise TV<\/a> reporter Oji Okpe announcing that Mr Tinubu had abolished the use of the Naira and adopted the use of dollars emerged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The 25-second video showed President Tinubu saying, \u201cWe are planning to abolish the usage of Naira and start using dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Our <a href=\"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/video-on-tinubus-plans-to-abolish-the-naira-for-dollars-manipulated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigation<\/a> revealed the video had been manipulated, and the original version was from a press conference in 2022, where Mr Tinubu announced his intention to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CDI0q1jG-3s?list=PLXeSMpj1vlkWiivUrsu7YEoq-MbbZRsQN&amp;t=34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">run<\/a> for the presidency.
