He advised that women should insert their fingers to wash the vagina to keep it clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;A transcript from the video clip in English and Igbo partly reads:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have to physically &#8220;Weru nkpinrin aka gi&#8221; (use your fingers), &#8220;tinye nime ikpu gi&#8221; (put into your vagina,) try your best to &#8220;Utitasia&#8221; (remove) all the deposits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">As of June 26, 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C8c_jUnIlqe\/?igsh=MXE0MDBtbzdyc2F1cg%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> had been viewed over 1,200,000 times, generating over 1,200 likes, 15,300 shares, and&nbsp; 7,200 comments. It also generated several reactions from the platform users, who support his statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Instagram user, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/boma_xy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boma_xy<\/a>, wrote, \u201cIt sounds funny, but it&#8217;s the fact, wash everywhere.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another user, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mizmaduhair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mizmaduhair<\/a> wrote, \u201cThis is for those who say the vagina is self-cleaning. Continue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">A commentator, @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stellzexclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stellzexclusive<\/a>, however, refuted his statement, saying, \u201cWomen, please disregard the advice of inserting your fingers in your vagina, and washing is totally wrong. Only wash the surface with clean water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">After observing the controversial reactions and engagement generated by the post, DUBAWA decided to fact-check it for public health safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, researchers from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, found that using gel sanitisers was linked with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/321537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight-fold increase<\/a> in a person\u2019s risk of developing a yeast infection and an almost 20 times higher risk of getting a bacterial infection. The same study also found an association between intimate washes and a 3.5 times higher risk of bacterial infections and a more than two-fold higher risk of having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/189953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urinary tract infection<\/a> (UTI). The scientists also noticed a similar association between using intimate cleansing wipes and UTIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, according to research published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2567125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Library of Medicine<\/a> on Vaginal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/douching#:~:text=The%20word%20%22douche%22%20means%20to,in%20a%20bottle%20or%20bag.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Douching<\/a>, the researcher found that washing the vagina was associated with an increased prevalence of bacterial vaginosis. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2567125\/#R74\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> found that bacterial vaginosis was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2567125\/#R35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strongly associated<\/a> with the use of commercial antiseptic products applied to the vulval mucosa or as a vaginal douche.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/insights.ovid.com\/pubmed?pmid=20215951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Other studies<\/a> have also found that douching can upset the natural bacterial balance in the vagina, rendering it more vulnerable to infections\u2014including sexually transmitted infections\u2014and increasing a person\u2019s risk of cervical cancer and pelvic inflammatory disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Experts Opinion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Julius Dare, the Acting Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Kwara State, and Obstetrician and Gynecologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, discouraged vagina washing. He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe vagina is one of those spaces that can cleanse themselves. You don&#8217;t need to put in soap to wash the vagina out; it is not needed. When you do that, you remove certain organisms that help maintain its normal state. When women practice douching, they come out with some infections that are not sexually transmitted. Still, because of the act, there is an imbalance in the normal milieu within the vagina. This is why people come down with some terrible odours down there and possibly discharge. So, it is not a recommended practice.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Further discouraging the idea of washing the vagina or dipping hands into once private parts for the sake of hygiene, Dr Muiz Adenekan, a consultant, obstetrician, and gynaecologist with the Lagos Island Maternity, said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you dip your hands into your private parts, you introduce something from the external to the internal parts.
