{"id":1949,"date":"2019-02-21T16:00:26","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T15:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/?p=1949"},"modified":"2019-08-26T17:08:17","modified_gmt":"2019-08-26T16:08:17","slug":"looking-beyond-the-headlines-media-sensationalism-in-news-coverage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dubawa.org\/dir\/looking-beyond-the-headlines-media-sensationalism-in-news-coverage\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond The Headlines #2: Media Sensationalism In News Coverage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly into the 20th century, Frederick Greenwood, editor of the Pall Mall Gazzette while speaking about sensationalism told the proprietor and managing editor of News of the World, George Riddell that he had looked at his paper &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waste-paper<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basket<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thought<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leave<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cook<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may read<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216; &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burned<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensationalism is a type of editorial bias in mass media in which events and topics in news stories are overhyped to present biased impressions on events, which may cause a manipulation to the truth of a story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some tactics include being deliberately obtuse, appealing to emotions, being controversial, intentionally omitting facts and information, being loud and self-centered, and acting to obtain attention. Sometimes, the content and subject matter typically affect neither the lives of the masses nor society and instead it is broadcast and printed to attract viewers and readers only.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the media has the responsibility of the playing its role as fourth estate of the realm, nowadays, it (media) is often accused of routine sensationalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>HOW TO PLAY SAFE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, there was a fatal accident that claimed the lives of over 100 persons, and the spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Commission called a press conference saying his team is investigating the cause of the &#8216;jam&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is widely known that the road safety official used the word &#8216;jam&#8217; to downplay the incident so that it looks minor. However, as a reporter, you know there&#8217;s a better way to describe the scene and therefore have the choice of using any word you consider suitable. If you use a word against the will of the road safety official, you will definitely be accused of sensationalism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How then would you describe the situation accurately? The best solution is to say: \u00a0&#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FRSC<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spokesman<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incident<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;jam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the eyewitnesses<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatal<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accident<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caused<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">road<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lives<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persons<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;. By this, you have detached yourself from the story as a reporter and made others label the accident. Regardless of what comes after, this is fair reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A media outfit that uses words like &#8216;shocking&#8217;, &#8216;alarm&#8217;, &#8216;alert&#8217; and &#8216;explosion&#8217; as headlines has not committed any offence if the publishing firm can back those words with facts.
