Full Text<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Governor Obaseki,<\/a> the incumbent governor of Edo State, came to power in November 2016. He served his first term until 2020, contested again for the second tenure, and won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, Jul. 17, 2024, a Facebook<\/a> user Akhenoba Robinson<\/a>, posted a video<\/a> showing the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, dissuading the electorates in Edo State from voting Mr Obaseki, alleging he is unfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The video post also includes the caption, \u201cReject him! Reject him! President Tinubu said to (the) Edo people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the same video has also been reposted here<\/a> and here<\/a> on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Tuesday, July 30, 2024, the post has gathered one like and one comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sensitive nature of the video prompted DUBAWA to investigate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We carried out a Google Lens search on some screenshots of the video posted. Results show that the footage has been in circulation since 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, we came across a similar 2020 Facebook video, as seen here<\/a> and here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Television Continental (TVC)<\/a> <\/a> also posted the same video on YouTube in 2020. The caption reads, \u201cTinubu Talks tough on Obaseki, calls on Edo people to reject him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probing further, we came across newspaper platforms that reported the president’s backlash at the governor in 2020. A Punch<\/a> report published on Sep. 15, 2020, noted how the president implored the voters in Edo state not to vote for Mr Obaseki. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Premium Times<\/a> also reported a similar story, adding that the reason for the political\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 criticism was the refusal of Mr Obaseki to swear in 14 lawmakers in the state House of Assembly. TheCable<\/a> also reported a similar event on that same day. Moreover, Mr Tinubu was referred to as the national leader of the All Progressives Congress at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
