Verdict: Misleading! <\/strong>DUBAWA\u2019s investigation shows that the video is from a terrorist attack in Yobe State, not Maiduguri. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Full Text <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The collapse of the Alau Dam, Maiduguri\u2019s main water source, caused<\/a> devastating flooding that submerged several homes, particularly along the city\u2019s coastal area in Borno State.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the aftermath of the disaster, there has been a spate of visual content online, showing the State\u2019s before-and-after conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sept. 11, 2024, a social media user on X posted<\/a> one of such videos claiming that it showed the dead bodies of Borno residents killed by the flood incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo \u2018Humans\u2019 Live In Aso Rock! Frame one: dead bodies killed in the Maiduguri flood being evacuated from the scenes,\u201d parts of the description attached to the post read. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Sept. 12, 2024, when DUBAWA scrutinised the post, it had generated 6,000 views, 60 reposts, 98 likes, and 14 bookmarks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DUBAWA opted to conduct this fact check to curb potential tension during a crisis like this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verification <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DUBAWA carefully examined the video and spotted an inscription on one of the small trucks conveying the carcass that read \u201cMafa.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this information, we conducted a keyword search, which shows that Mafa is a community in the Tarmuwa local government of Yobe State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, we extracted screen grabs from the video and used them to conduct a Google Lens image analysis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results indicate that the video has been online even before the flood crisis. The video shows the aftermath of terrorist violence in Yobe State. See here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We checked media reports to authenticate if there were recent occurrences of bandit violence in Yobe State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DUBAWA found a Daily Trust report<\/a> dated Sept. 3, 2024, which informed that Boko Haram insurgents who attacked the Mafa village killed many residents and set several homes and shops ablaze in Yobe State.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, AlJazeera<\/a> and ThisDay<\/a> newspaper reported similar stories.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
