On Friday, Oct. 12, 2024, Sierra Leone unveiled its new airline, \u201cAir Sierra Leone,\u201d<\/strong><\/a> almost two decades after \u201cSierra Leone Airlines\u201d ceased operations in 2006. <\/strong> <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the two decades of break, local and foreign passengers boarded flights controlled by different air transport companies from different countries, including Morocco, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flights such as Air-Moroc<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> <\/strong>Asky<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Brussels Airline,<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>and others have been at the centre of Sierra Leone\u2019s airspace, flying nationals and non-nationals from and to the Freetown<\/strong> International<\/strong> Airport,<\/strong> commonly<\/strong> called<\/strong> \u201cLungi Airport,\u201d<\/strong><\/a> located in Lungi Town in Freetown, Sierra Leone.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister of Transport and Aviation unveils \u201cAir Sierra Leone\u201d <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sierra Leone\u2019s  Minister of Transport and Aviation (MoTA) \u2014 Alhaji Fanday Turay<\/strong><\/a>, on Friday, Oct 9, 2024, officially unveiled \u2018Air Sierra Leone\u2019<\/strong> in Freetown \u2014 Sierra Leone at <\/strong>a well-attended programme.<\/strong><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister unveiled the Boeing Flight 737<\/strong> and called the development a \u201cbig boost for the country\u2019s aviation industry.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He disclosed that President Bio in particular has made frantic efforts to revive the country\u2019s air transportation by introducing \u2018Air<\/strong> Sierra<\/strong> Leone\u2019<\/strong> since \u2018Sierra<\/strong> Leone<\/strong> Airline\u2019<\/strong> ceased operations. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight type and capacity <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Air Sierra Leone is a \u201cBoeing\u201d type aircraft with a 50-seater capacity for passengers. <\/strong>The 16-year-old flight is an \u201cEmbraer\u201d<\/strong> type flight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement signed between Sierra Leone\u2019s Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA)<\/strong><\/a> and the <\/strong>Nigerian\u2013owned airline company based in Nigeria\u2014West Africa<\/strong><\/a>\u2014will introduce 3 \u201cBoeing\u201d flights <\/strong>that would be running local air transportation in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of Sierra Leone Airline <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The West African country had its first airline before <\/strong>its independence from Great Britain in 1961. <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1958, Sierra Leone had its first flight<\/strong><\/a> in collaboration with its British West African sister nations\u2014Ghana, Nigeria, and The Gambia- in an airline corporation, referred to as the West<\/strong> African<\/strong> Airways<\/strong> Corporation, <\/strong><\/a>flying within the four West African countries. Their operations also extend later to other countries, including\u2014London,  Monrovia, and Amsterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sierra Leone\u2019s airline had experienced numerous breakdowns in operations because of poor management. It permanently ceased full-scale operations in 2006 under the Sierra National Airline.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ing. Alpha Hassan Woute, 42,<\/strong> the airline was shut down due to the then airport\u2019s poor management.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air Sierra Leone\u2019s destinations  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the government of Sierra Leone and the Nigerian company that will operate the airline, Air Sierra Leone <\/strong>would be flying<\/a> from London to Freetown<\/strong> and from Freetown to other destinations<\/strong> decided by the management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new airline’s certificate<\/strong> of<\/strong> operations<\/strong> from the agreement states that it will operate under the Operations Certificate of the United Kingdom until Air Sierra Leone obtains its certificate of operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sierra Leoneans have received the news with mixed feelings in the past days. Some people expressed joy at the huge development in the country\u2019s aviation sector, which, according to Facebook<\/a> has been instrumental in this recent development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government\u2019s reaction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The government of Sierra Leone has expressed utmost enthusiasm about the introduction of the new airline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister of Information, Communications and Civic Education, Cherne Bah, noted<\/a> in a 2:39-minute video panel discussion<\/a> with the airline company’s topman that the government is poised to ensure that citizens get the best services they deserve under President Bio\u2019s leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bah asserted that Air Sierra Leone is not a \u2018national<\/strong> carrier\u2019<\/strong> because it is not owned by the state. However, he indicated further that the agreement between the government and the airline company will see Boeing Flight 737 as the nation\u2019s \u2018flag carrier\u2019 airline.   <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pledged the government\u2019s support to the airline company for safety and security in the best interest of serving the public and providing a level platform for the airline\u2019s smooth operations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline’s CEO, Emmanuel Izo,<\/a> said that the company\u2019s primary effort is to operate extensively in the West Coast region, including Accra and other places. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe flight will be operated by a private Nigerian company; hence, it is going to be managed properly. However, my fear is the ticket\u2019s cost, but I am sure that the government and the company would negotiate in the best interest of the citizens,\u201d he indicated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are Sierra Leoneans saying?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mannah Dominic is a resident of Freetown with travel experience; in a random engagement with DUBAWA, he said that the news is a welcoming initiative for the country to own a flight once again. He noted that the flight cost should be properly discussed with the company\u2019s management, stating that if the price is very high, then only foreigners can use the flight to travel to and from Sierra Leone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hassan Alpha Woute, 42, an Engineer resident in Freetown, spoke to DUBAWA and noted that the news is great. He said that the country used to own flights operating local transportation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked about his knowledge regarding the last time Sierra Leone owned a flight operating internationally, Hassan disclosed that it had been ages since the country had a plane running abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
