Its proximity with neighbouring countries where Jihadist groups have gained settlements has only exacerbated the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As authorities continue to battle the decades-long crisis, an X user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstladyship\/status\/1854630734981394710?t=klYmyHKOVbAm9FuW2t-qeg&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(@firstladyship)<\/a> shared a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstladyship\/status\/1854630734981394710?t=klYmyHKOVbAm9FuW2t-qeg&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, and claimed that a new terror group named Lukarawa has sprung up under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The post reads, \u201cBoko Haram started in 2002. Back then, Obasanjo was the president. Lukarawas started in 2024, under Asiwaju. Boko Haram was used to oust Jonathan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m here to tell you that Lukarawas won\u2019t oust Bola Tinubu. Asiwaju is not Jonathan. You will end up killing yourselves,\u201d the claimant added.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, the post has generated about 244,000 views, 4,147 likes, 839 reposts, and bookmarked 149 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUBAWA observed the comments made by other X users and noticed that most believed the claim\u2019s authenticity. They further criticised Tinubu\u2019s leadership as president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBola knows the game the North is playing. He used Muslim Muslim tickets as bait, and the North fell for it. T-pain will pepper them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reacting, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/doncharlo_1\/status\/1854836432096882994?t=AHT4l5OqIyfL2cHnvuVgMQ&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Doncharlo_1<\/a> said, \u201cThe Northern elites don&#8217;t know or understand who they are dealing with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUBAWA fact-checked the claim because of the nature of the issue and the reactions and conversations it generates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verification&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUBAWA conducted a keyword search on the emergence of Lakurawa, which led us to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/who-are-lakurawa-insurgent-group-threatening-nigeria-2024-11-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> report that mentions the terrorist group started in 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the outlet, the group used to be an Islamic organisation that helped locals fight armed gangs, commonly known as bandits, especially in the northwestern parts of the nation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report further explained that the group was not considered a threat until residents began accusing it of forcefully imposing Islamic law and engaging in theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theafricareport.com\/368321\/nigeria-who-are-the-lakurawa-terrorists-making-inroads-in-the-north-west\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africa Report<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/humanglemedia.com\/lakurawa-once-called-harmless-herders-now-a-deadly-terror-group-in-north-west-nigeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HumAngle<\/a> also reported similar accounts, tracing the terrorist group&#8217;s existence as far back as 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/375305100_Importing_Militant_Jihadists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by Murtala Rufa\u2019i, an expert in regional terrorism, the Lakurawa group was initially invited by local leaders in Gudu and Tangaza Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Sokoto State in 2017 to address the growing threats of bandits from Zamfara State.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Corroborating this, we looked at another <a href=\"https:\/\/ctc.westpoint.edu\/northwestern-nigeria-a-jihadization-of-banditry-or-a-banditization-of-jihad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research paper<\/a> published in 2022 by Mr Rufa\u2019i, James Barnett, and Abdulaziz Abdulaziz.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the paper, they posited that the Lakurawa militants rejected the Boko Haram label and preferred to be called Mujahideen or Ansaru, the franchise of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudson.org\/experts\/1319-james-barnett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Barnett<\/a>, a research fellow at the Washington-based Hudson Institute, who told DUBAWA that Lukarawa was not formed under Mr Tinubu. \u201cLakurawa is not a group that formed this year, despite some headlines to the contrary.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a local name used in northwest Nigeria for a network of jihadists from Mali, believed to be members of the Islamic State&#8217;s Sahel Province, that have been making periodic incursions into Sokoto state since 2018 and have recently established a small presence in Kebbi state as well,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the group had gained significant influence in the northwest region through their preaching and harsh interpretation of the Shariah [Islamic] law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey have actually had (an) intermittent presence in the region for about six years, and they have even recruited Nigerians from the northwest to fight in Mali in the past,\u201d said the University of Oxford PhD researcher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contrary to the assertion, a review of media reports, research papers, and interviews with a conflict expert shows that the terrorist group has existed since 2018 and was not formed under the Tinubu-led administration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Claim: An X user claimed that the Lakurawa terror group started under the administration of President Tinubu.
