Recently, Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/english\/news_e\/news24_e\/gc_29nov24_e.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reappointed<\/a> as the Director-General(DG). This four-year term will begin in September 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amidst this development, Grant Support, a Facebook Page, wrote that the WTO is giving Nigerians N200,000. The featured image on the post was designed using the face of the new WTO DG. The text in the image also noted that this loan was being disbursed in partnership with the Federal Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorld Trade Organization Grant, in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria. Apply now, secure non-refundable grants to help you expand your small or large scale business,&#8221; the post reads.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The post features a link accompanied by an &#8220;Apply Now&#8221; call-to-action. The image also includes Nigeria&#8217;s Coat of Arms and the WTO logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Nov. 23, 2024, the post has generated over 2,800 likes, 3,100 comments, and 60 shares. Similar posts were also found on Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/p\/15d19Ti25X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/18MTpywesv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/18HbjszJKm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/p\/15X8eeRZLL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/p\/15JxsnR8mD\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/15ob6mwEBg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1X4J3GPqFj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The virality of the post and the severity of the information\u2019s implications for Ms Okonjo-Iweala\u2019s reputation as WTO Director-General prompted DUBAWA to verify the claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Verification&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We clicked on the link attached to the <a href=\"https:\/\/webrafts.com\/apply-applications\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawG6fq9leHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHR5s7_3BUNZkP1UP34iDcqYbUQUsOmogERa4A-hp2gNuy2hhVyTTBp-eIw_aem_RIkKx8U0xN9umvetyYBAOw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a>, which redirected us to a website called Webcraft. The website then redirected us again to a US visa sponsorship opportunity page. The page does not mention the loan application. It appears to be a phishing attempt designed to drive traffic to unrelated websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then conducted a keyword search to see if any reputable news organisation reported the loan disbursement but found nothing. Instead, we saw old news reports in March 2024 by <a href=\"https:\/\/dailytrust.com\/wto-ifc-launch-n1-9bn-trade-facility-in-nigeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Trust<\/a> that the WTO initiated a $1.2 million project on Nigeria&#8217;s agricultural exports.
