As families struggle to put meals on the table with the country\u2019s high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/amp\/2021\/04\/22\/nigerians-lament-rising-cost-of-living-as-food-prices-soar-inflation-at-4-year-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost-of-living crisis<\/a>, people resort to these freebies to feed themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against this backdrop, an Instagram user, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/naija_today__?igsh=aDNuNHdzZG8wcG4=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Naija_Today__<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DEhXrGDMkhr\/?igsh=cWtpc2Zrd2gxdW8y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> via a now-deleted video that Nigerian citizens are running around for food as hunger bites harder in the nation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHungry in the land of Nigeria,\u201d the claimant captioned the clip.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the attached video, men and women could be seen being chased with a belt by a police officer after they excitedly rushed to a pickup vehicle carrying some food.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the doubtful contextual background of the video, DUBAWA decided to verify the assertion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verification<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ran a keyword search on Google to determine if there was a recent report from credible news outlets about police chasing locals in Nigeria over food but found no supporting information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUBAWA observed that the police van had an inscription that read d\u2019Adjam\u00e9. We ran keyword searches on Google and confirmed that Adjam\u00e9 is a neighbourhood in Abidjan, the metropolitan capital of C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we shared our findings with a local journalist who spoke anonymously because of his organisation\u2019s policy. He confirmed that the clip was shot in Cote d\u2019Ivoire and that the language in the video is French, the country\u2019s national language. However, he could not accurately pinpoint the exact incident that triggered the situation in the video.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUBAWA contacted other local journalists to determine the video\u2019s context, but they could not provide any information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The claim is misleading as the footage was traced to C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, not Nigeria.
