While APC governors have endorsed Tinubu<\/a> as their preferred candidate, the absence of Shettima\u2019s name in these declarations has stirred arguments that he may<\/a> or may not be<\/a> dropped as a running mate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These concerns were further amplified when the APC North-East stakeholders\u2019 summit turned chaotic<\/a> after the party\u2019s regional vice chairman, Mustapha Salihu, declared Tinubu the party\u2019s sole candidate for re-election, without mentioning Shettima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As political tension builds, an X user, Biafra_Daily Mirror (@biafra_daily), on June 20, 2025, posted<\/a> a photo (archived here<\/a>) of Vice President Shettima with the newly commissioned official residence in the background. The image featured the Channels Television logo. The post’s caption claimed that Shettima had \u201cmoved to his residence after finding out CCTV was installed without his knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post caption read, \u201cThey are betraying themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June 20, 2025, the post had attracted over 200,000 views, nearly 2,000 likes, hundreds of shares, and various comments, some supporting the claim, others casting doubt, and many expressing outrage over an estimated \u20a621 billion project cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same claim was shared here<\/a> and circulated widely across TikTok<\/a> and Facebook.<\/a> A TikTok user, @tamarapreyenews, posted the claim<\/a> (archived here<\/a>), amassing over 4,900 likes, 474 shares, and 750 comments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the politically sensitive nature of the claim and the viral reactions it sparked, DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verification <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To verify the claim, DUBAWA conducted keyword searches using phrases such as \u201cShettima CCTV surveillance residence,\u201d \u201cVP Shettima moves out of residence,\u201d and \u201cVice President\u2019s bugged house.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We found no credible local or international news platform that published a report corroborating the claim that the Vice President discovered unauthorised CCTV installations or that he relocated because of them. This includes Channels TV, whose logo is in the claim\u2019s image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To further investigate the image used in the viral post, DUBAWA performed a reverse image search. We traced the image back to a broadcast aired by Channels Television<\/a> on June 7, 2024, which covered the commissioning of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s newly completed official residence in Abuja. Other reputable media outlets reported the same event, including AIT<\/a>, The Guardian<\/a>, and Premium Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historically, Nigeria\u2019s vice presidents have resided in Akinola Aguda House, located within the Presidential Complex<\/a> at the Three Arms Zone in Abuja. In 2010, however, the federal government initiated the construction of a more befitting and purpose-built official residence for the Vice President. Initially awarded \u20a67 billion, the project suffered delays, abandonment, and scrutiny due to inflated costs. According to credible reports by Premium Times<\/a> and BusinessDay<\/a>, the contract was eventually revised to \u20a621\u2013\u20a622 billion by 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The building was finally completed and commissioned on June 7, 2024<\/a>. It was widely expected that Vice President Shettima would move in soon after the commissioning. However, as of February 2025, reports<\/a> indicated that the residence remained unoccupied, raising questions and sparking online speculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, this isn’t the first time such claims have surfaced. In March 2025, a Facebook user, Idris Ahmed, alleged<\/a> that the Vice President deliberately avoided moving into the newly constructed mansion due to fears that the building\u2019s security and communication infrastructure had been compromised or allegedly \u201cbugged\u201d to monitor his activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current viral claim builds on this narrative. Still, it shifts the focus to the alleged discovery of secret CCTV cameras, suggesting that Shettima had initially moved into the building but later relocated to a private residence in response to this discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, DUBAWA\u2019s investigation found no credible evidence to support this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrary to the viral claim, a February 2025 report by Daily Trust<\/a> stated that the delay in occupying the residence was not due to hidden surveillance devices, but rather to ongoing security concerns and the residence\u2019s relatively isolated location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further keyword searches on the verified X handle of the Vice President\u2019s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha<\/a>, showed no official announcements or press releases acknowledging a relocation or confirming any alleged discovery of unauthorised surveillance installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DUBAWA also profiled the X account (@biafra_daily<\/a>) that shared the claim. Our findings reveal that the account is associated with Biafran separatist sentiments<\/a> and has consistently posted anti-government narratives that undermine Nigeria\u2019s security institutions and national unity. Its content history indicates a strong bias and repeated attempts to spread politically and ethnically divisive misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, DUBAWA<\/a> had cited<\/a> one of @biafra_daily\u2019s previous posts<\/a> targeting national institutions <\/a>as contributing to the escalation of public fear and misinformation in an already volatile region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This pattern of disinformation raises red flags regarding the authenticity and intent of the claim in question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
