Liberia did not exchange ECOWAS chairmanship with Nigeria for UN non-permanent seat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Claim: <\/strong>An ex-government worker asserted that \u201cLiberia exchanged\u00a0 the ECOWAS Chairmanship for the non-permanent seat in Guinea Bissau in July 2023 to Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-4653c26270bd31cf894d786d602e1e5a wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Verdict:<\/strong> DUBAWA\u2019s research found that Nigeria was elected to the chairmanship position of ECOWAS, but Liberia did not give the spot to Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Full Text&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liberia won a seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on June 3, 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following this, a former special assistant under the government of ex-President George Weah has attributed the win to Weah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/16hLyYpPh7\/?mibextid=wwXIfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aloysius Howe<\/a> stated in a Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/1A9v34kVyx\/?mibextid=wwXIfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> that Liberia won the bid for a seat on the UNSC under Weah\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He claimed the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union endorsed Liberia\u2019s candidacy, and that \u201cLiberia exchanged the ECOWAS Chairmanship for the non-permanent seat in Guinea Bissau in July 2023 to Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ECOWAS\u2019 chairmanship is the leadership role of the chairperson of the authority, comprising the heads of state and government of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Howe\u2019s post was met with criticism, with the majority of the commenters saying that he wrote it out of hatred for the ruling establishment, under whose administration Liberia won the non-permanent seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the political undertone of the post, DUBAWA launched an investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verification&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUBAWA got a copy of the 1993 <a href=\"https:\/\/parl.ecowas.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EN-Revised-treaty.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revised treaty<\/a> of ECOWAS. The treaty states that the community&#8217;s chairpersonship is obtained only through an election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Article 8, session 2 of the treaty, the chairperson&#8217;s office shall be held every year by a member state \u201celected by the authority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authority, by definition, is the authority of heads of state and government of the community, which is the supreme institution of ECOWAS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July 2023, following the one-year tenure of Guinea-Bissau\u2019s President Umaro Embalo, an election was conducted for the chairmanship position. This caused Nigeria to become the chairman of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/ecowas.int\/final-communique-of-the-63rd-ordinary-session-of-the-authority-of-heads-of-state-and-government-of-ecowas-bissau-republic-of-guinea-bissau-9-july-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">communique<\/a> issued by ECOWAS on the 9th day of July 2023, it stated, \u201cthe Heads of State and Government elected H.E.
