David Moinina Sengeh (PhD), the chief minister and chief innovation officer of Sierra Leone, has corrected a false claim<\/a> he made regarding President Julius Maada Bio\u2019s recent election as the new chairperson of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Sengeh\u2019s retraction<\/a> publicly corrects his previous incorrect claim that resident Bio \u201cis the first Sierra Leonean President to serve as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of States and Government of ECOWAS,\u201d made in his congratulatory messages posted across three of his widely followed social media handles: Facebook<\/a>,  LinkedIn<\/a> and X<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post follows President Bio\u2019s election as ECOWAS Chair on Sunday, June 22, 2025, during the 67th Ordinary Session of Heads of States, succeeding Nigeria\u2019s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chief Minister\u2019s claim drew public doubt, and one of our 2025 Kwame KariKari OSINT Fact-Checking Fellowship fellows quickly fact-checked it to set the records straight and accurately and prevent the further spread of false information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The verification revealed that Bio is, in fact, the second Sierra Leonean president to hold this position. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact check was published on AWE Media SL<\/a>, Awoko Newspaper<\/a>, and the DUBAWA\/DIDAC<\/a> websites. Respectively, the fact-check was published on June 23, 24 and 25. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few hours after the first publication, the minister corrected himself on his Facebook<\/a> page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
