Over 300 tapes of Baltasar, the Director General of Equatorial Guinea\u2019s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), with multiple women, went viral online during an investigation by the country\u2019s security authorities for alleged fraud.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 2, 2025, an X user, Benjamin Effah Amponsah (@Sir_Benjaminn), <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Sir_Benjaminn\/status\/1940410237493899655\">claimed<\/a> Baltasar had been sentenced to 18 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Thursday, July 3, 2025, the post had gained over four million views, 32,000 likes, 5,300 retweets, 5,600 bookmarks, and 1,800 replies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One user, NKOLI (@Real_Enkay), reacting to the post, wrote, \u201cHe deserves a lifetime,\u201d while another user, Wano P3 seam (@shehoaa), wrote, \u201c18 years for just using what God gave him? How?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another user, Sammy UgoNabo (@Sire_Sammi), enquired about the sentence. He wrote, \u201cI hope his punishment is not because of the released videos. It doesn\u2019t seem like he videoed them without their consent. I\u2019m curious to know the actual crime he\u2019s doing down for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found similar claims on Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/p\/16wyaLQpzh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1BAesKc3RV\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/p\/16irZtseYT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/p\/15GWe2dTBj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the claim\u2019s virality and a request for verification sent to DUBAWA, we decided to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is Baltasar Engonga?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baltasar Engonga, also known as Baltasar Ebang Engonga Avomo, <a href=\"https:\/\/yen.com.gh\/entertainment\/270397-meet-baltasar-engonga-age-family-details-trending-equatorial-guinea-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is a former public official of Equatorial Guinea<\/a>. He is a member of the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea and a nephew of President Teodoro Nguema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He <a href=\"https:\/\/tribuneonlineng.com\/baltasar-ebang-what-you-need-to-know-about-equatorial-guineas-anif-boss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously served as the Director General<\/a> of the National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF), which is responsible for tackling money laundering and financial crime in Equatorial Guinea. Between 2015 and 2020, he was head of the Directorate General of Insurance and Reinsurance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, Baltasar faced legal scrutiny and public backlash and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/entertainment\/naija-fashion\/752562-baltasar-engonga-dismissed-as-equatorial-guinea-financial-investigation-agency-dg-first-lady-reacts.html?tztc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismissed<\/a> as Director General of ANIF in November 2024. He has been held at Black Beach Prison since September 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is currently standing trial for embezzling state funds, unlawful enrichment, and abuse of power during his tenure as head of the Directorate General of Insurance and Reinsurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the recent spread of Baltasar\u2019s pictures with claims that he had been sentenced to 18 years, we conducted a reverse image search using Google Lens. Our search led to several articles, YouTube videos and social media posts that used these images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Instagram user, zimcelebs_official, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DLm_rUMiL3L\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared<\/a> on July 2, 2025, that the National Prosecutor\u2019s Office in Equatorial Guinea has requested a total sentence of 18 years in prison against Baltasar Engonga in a high-profile corruption case currently underway in Malabo. According to this user\u2019s post, Engonga is accused of embezzlement, illicit enrichment, and abuse of office. The prosecution seeks eight years for embezzlement, four years and five months for illicit enrichment, and six years and one day for abuse of duty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, he faces a fine of over 910 million CFA francs and a ban on holding any public office during his sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another news report by <a href=\"http:\/\/afrikmag.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afrikmag.com<\/a> noted that the Malabo court opened a high-profile trial on Monday, June 30, 2025.
