Nevertheless, since he\u00a0mentioned webometrics, we restricted our fact-check to that source.<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>VERIFYING THE CLAIMS:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being number one means the university is ranked as the topmost university in Nigeria. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CLAIM 1: UNN IS NOT THE TOP UNIVERSITY IN NIGERIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice Chancellor may be right on his claim that the institution was dysfunctional before 2014 as the institution showed some improvement in its ranking in 2016. However, our f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indings and search on webometrics \u00a0revealed that UNN has not been ranked as the number one university in the past three years unless the VC took his ranking from another source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Webometrics_Ranking_of_World_Universities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">webometrics ranking<\/a> has been published twice a year covering more than 20,000 tertiary institutions worldwide. The rankings are used to know the academic standing of tertiary institutions and to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0attract students and partnerships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naijaloaded.com.ng\/other\/latest-webometrics-ranking-nigerian-universities-july-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 webometrics ranking<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0showed that University of Ibadan was the number one university in Nigeria while Covenant University was second, and UNN took the third position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngscholars.net\/top-10-universities-in-nigeria-webometrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In 2018<\/a>, UNN was not even among the top three universities in Nigeria as\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Ibadan emerged first;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covenant University emerged second; and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) emerged third.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webometrics.info\/en\/africa\/nigeria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 webometrics ranking<\/a> released in January saw the re-emergence of UNN.
