DUBAWA found no evidence that Putin proved Jesus was from Africa. Also, the claim was formed from an unrelated video posted by Daily Mail World during Putin\u2019s unexpected visit to Kherson in 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Full Text<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July 2025, a Russian news outlet, <a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/en\/news\/2025\/07\/23\/russia-s-supreme-court-bans-international-satanism-movement-as-extremist#:~:text=According%20to%20Russian%20prosecutors,%20the,radical%20nationalism%20and%20neo-Nazism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meduza<\/a>, reported that the Russian Supreme Court had imposed a ban on what they described as \u201cinternational movement of satanists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meduza further reported that Russian prosecutors had said the \u201cinternational movement of satanists\u201d is based on an extremist ideology deeply derived from hatred and hostility toward traditional religious faiths. The ideology is said to be tied to radical nationalism and neo-Nazism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/russia-supreme-court-bans-satanist-movement-labeling-extremist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politico<\/a>, in November 2023, Russia has also imposed a stringent ban on non-existent \u201cinternational LGBT movement,\u201d including another Supreme Court ban on fictitious movements like the \u201cColumbine international youth movement,\u201d and the \u201canti-Russian separatist movement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a Sierra Leonean Facebook page, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/1B4soGZkat\/?mibextid=wwXIfrRe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zainab Natural Remedy<\/a>, posted a video, alleging that the Russian President Vladimir Putin has proven that Jesus Christ was an African after imposing a ban on the \u201csatanic churches\u201d in Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the video, the original claimant can be heard saying: \u201cPutin has introduced a black Jesus, and he is saying that the picture from the 15th Century proved that Jesus was not white. But Jesus was black, and he was from Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of August 11, 2025, when the claim was posted, it had already gained 345 likes, 25 comments, and 106 shares.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The claim made inroads among social media users, with the majority believing it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdYF8tpovIkLnK_f0AKYtDBaLgIPCWRTwwaupKCbiggZOG3PGGojBMZgs3EO6iQbwXKXdIA8fg-14ZM2rlkRdNm6d_yYeAXJVcw2ZNzcqZOEE9J5-uuUfCOdK0MwEILF7lQyJ6E?key=8qCDg7pLir8HUkP_1VyWDw\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Screenshots of the comments.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim due to its potential to mislead the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firstly, DUBAWA conducted a Google keyword search and found no evidence to support the claim.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondly, we used Google Reverse Image to analyze part of the video. We found that Daily Mail World uploaded the original video to <a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=SuXk2QDsEOc&amp;t=77s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube in 2023<\/a> during Putin&#8217;s visit to Kherson, a city occupied by Russian troops in Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first frame of the video, Putin was welcomed from his helicopter. In the second frame, he is seen opening an ancient box with an icon or artefact resembling a \u201cblack Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the video, however, Putin neither said the \u201cicon\u201d was a black Jesus nor said it was from Africa, even though the icon resembled a black Jesus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our key observation of the video showed that the claimant took the incident out of context to form a narrative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further research on the archive of a Russian state-owned news outlet, <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/society\/1606131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tass<\/a>, showed that Putin had gifted the \u201cicon replicas\u201d to his troops in 2023 during his visit to Kherson.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tass reported that the icon, \u201cThe Savior Not Made By Hand,\u201d was bought in the United States from a private collection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The icon, which resembles a black Jesus, has a deep connection with the Russian military, as it\u2019s used for protection in war.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original icons had belonged to Pyotr Vannovsky, Russia\u2019s minister of war in the late 1800s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A press release also published by the <a href=\"http:\/\/kremlin.ru\/events\/president\/news\/70944\/photos\/70876?_x_tr_hist=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kremlin<\/a> in 2023 proved that Putin had given copies of the \u201cSaviour Not Made By Hand\u201d icon to the military. Yet, we found no report that Putin \u201cproved Jesus was from Africa\u201d or said anything related to Jesus being from Africa.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the symbolic purpose of Saviour Not Made By Hand to the Russian Military?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ar.culture.ru\/en\/subject\/spas-nerukotvornyy-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ARTEFACT<\/a>, the \u201cSaviour Not Made By Hand\u201d symbolises Jesus Christ in the Russian Iconographic tradition. It has existed since the 17th century.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The iconographic composition of the \u201cSaviour Not Made by Hands\u201d is from an ancient apocryphal legend (a non-canonical text). Christ\u2019s face is either painted within a halo or depicted on a ubrus, a cloth. While he spent some time in Egypt as a child, his family fled there to escape King Herod, and his origins and life are primarily associated with the Judea and Galilee regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, there is no sufficient evidence that Christ was from Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0However, the \u201cSavior Not Made By Man\u201d icon, which represents the image of Christ, was being designed worldwide.
