Nigerians and international bodies have called for a surrogacy ban in reaction to DUBAWA\u2019s in-depth report<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report reveals how misinformation is weaponised to lure women into the practice, Facebook is utilised for advertising, and Nigeria\u2019s lack of law in relation to surrogacy allows for exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following publication, International bodies that work at the intersection of women\u2019s rights and reproductive health called for the ban of surrogacy on Facebook and in respective countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

StopSurrogacyNowUK (@WombsNotForRent)<\/a>, a women\u2019s rights group in the United Kingdom (UK) fighting against the UK proposals on law reform, wrote <\/a> on X:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have been warning about how Facebook is used to target women for #surrogacy for some time.\u201d They added<\/a>, \u201cWe are pleased to finally hear directly from surrogate mothers in Nigeria. This investigative journalism from @sim_bakare reveals the true exploitative nature of international #surrogacy, something we have been warning about for some time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another international non-profit organisation, Declaration of Casablanca (@CasaDeclaration<\/a>), seeking to protect women and children from the global surrogacy market, referencing the documentary<\/a> on X, said, \u201cThis is exactly why we are fighting for the universal abolition of surrogacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an email correspondence, Surrogacy Concern (@SurrogConcern<\/a>), a non-governmental organisation campaigning against the liberalisation of surrogacy laws, requested that DUBAWA inform them of any British commissioning couples coming to Nigeria for surrogacy. They also affirmed on X<\/a> in reaction to the documentary that surrogacy \u201cneeds to be globally banned because it is baby buying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facebook criticised<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With the report garnering over 120,000 views<\/a> in 24 hours on social media, Nigerians have also criticised Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is such an eye opener,\u201d Purple Passion (@annie_chrissss<\/a>) said on X<\/a>. \u201cA Facebook page Agency for Surrogate mothers is genuinely the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in recent times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou see Facebook…the atrocities that happen on that app,\u201d Odika Odi Kpoba, odika odi egolu<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(@okalamadunammuo<\/a>) said<\/a>, alluding to the frequent occurrence of human rights violations on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also calling for a ban on surrogacy, @tawakalituomotolani9811 and @Lifewithtemi<\/a> said, \u201cSurrogacy needs to be banned,\u201d in reaction to the documentary on YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, on X, Abdul (@Oyindamorela_) said<\/a>, \u201cSurrogacy should be outlawed and should attract criminal charges!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elderly Cynical Feminist (@honeydropz999<\/a>), in her reaction, on the micro-blogging app, also affirmed that \u201cSurrogacy needs to be outlawed, period.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On LinkedIn, CNN Academy\u201925 fellow Korede Badmus<\/a> calls for a ban,<\/a> stating that \u201cwhen desperation meets exploitation, women pay the price with their bodies, health, and dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, as reactions continue to trail the report, with some citizens calling for a ban, other Nigerians who had previously been in support of surrogacy have changed their stance, calling the practice exploitative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uche is a girl, (@UchayOkolee<\/a>) said<\/a> on X, \u201cGod, please forgive me for thinking that surrogacy was a good idea. OMG!!! I see why the Catholic church has kicked against it so much. Oh dear!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, YM (@JemimAransiola)<\/a> also said,<\/a> \u201cI didn\u2019t quite understand the argument against surrogacy and how it\u2019s exploitative before, but I have silently read superior arguments and I absolutely get it now. I love how this video sheds even more light on the issue.\u201d
