The word deepfake itself is a coinage from deep learning and the fake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The technology creates convincing but entirely fictional events making people who didn\u2019t participate in such occurrence appear very closely real. It allows anyone with a powerful computer to create a picture or video of people saying what they didn\u2019t actually say.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">It was researchers and university academics who started developing the technology in the 1990s, but it recently slipped into the hands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/06\/12\/top-ai-researchers-race-detect-deepfake-videos-we-are-outgunned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amateurs<\/a> and communities of computer users online.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Audios can be deepfaked too. Simple apps like VoiceApp let users mimic the voices of celebrities and public figures to share on messaging applications like WhatsApp. Other sophisticated apps like Lyrebird AI and Overdub allow users to train them to mimic the voices of anybody.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Tool for Scam&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Several deepfake audio scams were reported worldwide, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jessedamiani\/2019\/09\/03\/a-voice-deepfake-was-used-to-scam-a-ceo-out-of-243000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a> of a hacker who mimicked the voice of the CEO of a UK-based German company which cost the company \u00a3200, 000!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">According to a report by <a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forbes<\/a>, the \u201cfraudster called the company three times: the first to initiate the transfer, the second to falsely claim it had been reimbursed, and a third time seeking a followup payment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">It was at this point that the victim grew skeptical; he could see that the purported reimbursement had not gone through, and he noticed that the call had been made from an Austrian phone number.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Blowing like Balloon<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The number of deepfakes continue to balloon at an alarming rate. A 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/sensity.ai\/archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> by Deeptrace, a startup for tracing the deepfakes, found 7,965 deepfakes on the Internet. Nine months later, the figure jumped to 14,678, approximately doubling the entire videos produced since the emergence of the technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Simple internet search could take you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativebloq.com\/features\/deepfake-examples\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hundreds of deepfakes<\/a> on social media, especially YouTube. The deepfakes online today range from satire, revenge pornography and celebrity scandals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Political Manipulation&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of deepfake to manipulate voters&#8217; decisions is also getting popular and there is likelihood that similar videos may stir religious unrest, public tensions and undermine democratic discourse and development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, the video of Ali Bango <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/02\/13\/how-sick-president-suspect-video-helped-sparked-an-attempted-coup-gabon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suspected<\/a> by the citizens of Gabon as a deepfake led to launching a military coup, citing the video as a deception from the president.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest threat of deepfakes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/is-seeing-still-believing-the-deepfake-challenge-to-truth-in-politics\/#cancel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to The Brookings Institutions, is the destruction of public trust. As deepfakes continue to become popular, people will no longer trust one another and it will become more urgent to debunk claims even if they are true and clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sundayguardianlive.com\/opinion\/deepfakes-destroy-democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to John Dabson, a former British diplomat and expert on deepfake, a \u201cdeepfake could destroy democracy\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Art of Detection&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Technologies emerging to spot deepfakes such as the ones created during Facebook&#8217;s Deepfake Detection Challenge (<a href=\"https:\/\/ai.facebook.com\/blog\/deepfake-detection-challenge-results-an-open-initiative-to-advance-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DDC<\/a>) are found weak and become outdated easily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers at the Deeptrace have initially found that the eyes of people on deepfake videos don\u2019t blink.
