DUBAWA fact-checker wins African Fact-Checking Awards

DUBAWA fact-checker, Jonas Nyabor, has emerged winner of the 2022 African Fact-checking Awards in the ‘Fact-Check of the year by a Professional Fact-Checker’ category. 

Mr Nyabor won the award with his fact-check article which exposed perpetrators of an anti-vaccination campaign in Ghana. 

He was presented the award at an award dinner wrapping up the 2022 Africa Facts Summit.

Mr Nyabor thanked both DUBAWA and Africa Check for providing him with a platform and mentorship.

“I appreciate DUBAWA for the mentorship and guidance provided to me on this journey of promoting truth in public discourse,” he said. “Of course to Africa Check for setting the pace; resources, and trainings to develop fact-checking across the continent,”

In the same category, James Okong’o of AFP Fact Check emerged runner-up with his fact-check article, titled: ‘False political quotes fuel online disinformation ahead of Kenya election.’

In the ‘Fact-Check of the Year by a Working Journalist,’ Kunle Adebajo of HumAngle Media emerged winner while Kabir Yusuf of Premium Times was adjudged, runner-up. Mr Adebajo is an alumnus of DUBAWA’s yearly fellowship.

A group of three students of the University of Mauritius; Vidyasharita Bumma, Kokeelavani Mauree and Sachita Gobeen, won the ‘Fact-Check of the Year by a Student Journalist’ category.
