Claim: Opposition CDC-COP Chairperson Foday Massaquio claimed that the CDC government left Liberia’s International Reserve at $240 million in 2024.

President Joseph Boakai took over the administration of the state from former President George Weah in January 2024. However, partisan economic debate between the two parties’ officials continues unabated.

In one such conversation, the opposition CDC-COP Chairperson, Foday Massaquio, alleged that the CDC government left Liberia’s International Reserve at $240 million.

Massaquio made the claim at an Intellectual Centre in Logan Town, District 15, which was carried live on Facebook by Verity Online News. The claim was made at 2:32 minutes of the live video.

The live video generated 53 Likes, 65 comments, and 122 Shares. DUBAWA decided to conduct a fact-check of the claim as part of its mandate to counter misinformation and disinformation, and to promote truth-telling in public discourse.

Verification

Our researcher visited the Central Bank of Liberia’s official website and reviewed January 2024 data. The statistics show that Liberia’s International Reserve stood at $443.06 million in January 2024.

According to the Central Bank of Liberia statistics, Foday Massaquio’s claim is false.
