Shortly after Hilda Baci was recognised by the Guinness World Records (GWR) for the longest cooking time by an individual, her achievement ignited the ambition of fellow Nigerians, who either wanted to surpass her record or innovate theirs.

Adeyeye Adeola made a recent one among these attempts at the Ile-Oluji area of Ondo State. Tagged “Deocookathon,” she embarked on a 150-hour marathon cooking on June 30, 2023.

While some social media users perceived her efforts as envious of Chef Baci’s, she received support from the Ondo State Commissioner for Finance, Wale Akinterinwa, alongside other lawmakers from the state.

To celebrate her feat, Campus Catch Nigeria, a Facebook blog, announced that Chef Adeola has “finally dethroned” Hilda Baci by surpassing her cooking time.

“She now has the world record for the longest cooking time by an individual,” the announcement partly reads.

The credibility of this claim, which has garnered over 2,000 likes, remained unchallenged by fellow Facebook users. Conversely, it has received a wide array of congratulatory comments. Therefore, DUBAWA decided to verify the truthfulness of the information.

Verification

The Guinness World Records (GWR) is a global publication released each year. It compiles records of outstanding human accomplishments and remarkable natural phenomena.

According to the GWR, a world record is usually “the best global and most important performance ever recorded and officially verified in a specific skill, sport, or other activity.” These are collated and published by the book Guinness World Records or other world records organisations.

Like others, the attempt of Ms Adeola was reported by newspapers like Punch, DailyPost and Tribune Online. Despite maintaining that the GWR approved her challenge, there has since been no report about her recognition.

When DUBAWA visited GWR’s website, we found that Hilda Baci remains the world record holder of the “longest cooking marathon (individual)” with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.

We further searched to confirm if any other organisation has recognised Chef Adeola, but we have not found any.

Conclusion

Even though Chef Adeola reportedly completed her 150-hour cooking ambition, she has not been recognised by the Guinness World Records. Hilda Baci is still the holder of the world’s longest cooking certificate. The claim is misleading.
