False! Governance Commission 2026 budget is less than $3 million

Claim: The political leader of the Movement for Progressive Change says the “Governance Commission takes more than $3 million from the 2026 draft national budget.”

Full Text

The government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP), presented the 2026 draft national budget, totalling approximately $1.2 billion.

In response to the country’s budget envelope, the political leader of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) stated that the government is funding institutions that don’t meaningfully contribute to increasing the country’s income or economic value.

Simeon Freeman named more than 30 institutions in the budget, which he claims are a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Among those institutions is the Governance Commission, which Mr Freeman says, “Ttakes more than $3 million from the draft 2026 national budget.”

The former presidential candidate can be heard from 8:50 to 8:58 in a live press engagement.

Verification

DUBAWA checked the official website of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) to review the 2026 draft national budget of the Governance Commission.

The commission is projected to receive about $2,311,324 in next year’s budget, contrary to Freeman’s claims that it will take more than $3 million from the same budget.

This is seen on page 163 of the draft budget.
