Full Text

Movement for Progressive Change Political leader Simeon Freeman claimed that the last housing unit constructed by the Liberian government was built during former President Tolbert’s regime.

“The last time we developed a housing structure here was during Tolbert’s administration.”

Freeman made the claim during a speech at an intellectual centre in Monrovia on April 27, 2026. He made the claim exactly 34 minutes into the live feed. The live feed generated 178 likes, 44 comments, and 1.6k shares.

DUBAWA decided to conduct a fact-check of the claim as part of its mandate to counter misinformation and disinformation, and to promote truth-telling in public discourse.

Verification

Former Liberian President William R. Tolbert served from 1971 to 1980, when he was killed in a coup led by then-Liberian Army Sergeant Samuel Doe.

However, research conducted by our researcher at the Executive Mansion shows that former President George Weah dedicated the Pro-Poor Housing Project in Kpelle Village, Grand Gedeh County, in 2021.

Following the first phase of the project, residents expressed gratitude to the Liberian Leader in a live Executive Mansion Interview.

Conclusion

Based on evidence from the Executive Mansion of former President George Weah, the claim that Freeman made is false.
