Claim: An Instagram user claims Nigeria has officially announced a ban on US nationals from entering the country.

Verdict: False. Findings indicate that no credible news outlet has reported the Instagram user’s claim. Furthermore, neither the NIS nor the Nigerian government has made such an official announcement.

On Dec. 22, 2025, the United States issued Presidential Proclamation 10998, which limits the entry of foreign nationals and suspends the issuance of visas to nationals of 19 countries, effective Jan. 1, 2026.
The countries affected by the proclamation are Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Venezuela, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Recently, an Instagram user, headlines.360 claims that Nigeria has officially declared a ban on all US nationals from entering the country, which has now caused diplomatic concerns.
“Nigeria has officially announced a ban on all US nationals from entering the country,” the Instagram user wrote.
“{Further} triggering serious diplomatic concerns and raising fresh questions about security, retaliation, and US–Africa relations,” the Instagram user added.
As of Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, the post has garnered over 1,400 likes and 479 comments.
Other Instagram users who came across the post either commended the Nigerian government for the action or disbelieved it.
“Good news, Nigerians,” Lethibelas commented.
“Great,” Seabornrena wrote.
“Na lie,” Uyiexcellent wrote, meaning it is a lie.
“Fake news oh,” Kechamani pointed out.
Due to contrary responses to the post and the sensitivity of the claim, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA conducted a keyword search related to the claim and discovered no reputable news source has reported the alleged development.
We checked the official X page of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) for any announcement regarding the Instagram user’s claim, but found nothing related to it.
Furthermore, we checked the official X page of the Nigerian presidency to see whether the Nigerian government has implemented such a policy for US nationals, but found no evidence of any connection between the Nigerian government and the alleged ban.
Moreover, there has been no reaction from the White House regarding the alleged ban on American nationals from Nigeria.
Conclusion
Findings show that no credible news source has reported the Instagram user’s claim. Neither the NIS nor the Nigerian government made such a pronouncement. So the claim is false.
