False! No Recent Assassination Attempt on Capt. Ibrahim Traore

Claim: A Facebook page, WeBlog232, has alleged that Capt. Ibrahim Traore has survived another assassination attempt. 

Verdict! False! As of May 26, 2025, when the claim was reported, there has been no credible report of any assassination attempt on Capt. Ibrahim Traore since the last failed coup in April 2025.

Captain Ibrahim Traore, the Leader of Burkina Faso’s Junta, has been buzzing social media platforms with his revolutionary ideas since he successfully staged a coup in 2022. 

In April 2025, Captain Traore’s government said it foiled a coup attempt to dethrone the Junta Leader, as reported by the BBC. 

As of May 26, 2025, a popular Sierra Leonean blog, WeBlog232, reported that Captain Ibrahim Traore survived another assassination attempt. 

Part of the post reported Ibrahim Traore as saying: “My family begged me to step down; they feared I’d be killed like Sankara. But I told them even if I die, it’ll be for the good people of Burkina Faso.”

The post triggered mixed reactions. Some believed that Capt. Traore had indeed been the target of another assassination attempt, while few discarded the claim as false.

Within just four days of the claim being reported, it has garnered 791 likes, 39 comments, and 12 shares. 

The reactions to the post triggered DUBAWA to investigate the claim as part of its mandate to amplify truth. 

Verification

The researcher conducted a keyword Google search to verify the claim, but found no evidence of another assassination attempt on May 25, 2025, the day the post was made, or in the days preceding it.

Our investigation also revealed that @joe__bassey initially reported the claim on X one week ago, while four days later, @africanhub reported it on X. 

Our search revealed only reports of a failed coup attempt in April 2025, as reported by BBC, Africa News, DW, and France 24.

Further research also revealed that in 2023, Al-Jazeera and Voice of America reported another failed coup in Burkina Faso; however, there is no evidence of a recent Coup or assassination attempt. 

An in-depth search on the official news website of the Agence d’Information du Burkina did not find any related news to the claim reported by WeBlog232. 

DUBAWA also contacted Weblog232 via WhatsApp, and they said they don’t have anything to provide the researcher when asked to provide evidence for the claim.

“Sorry! I have nothing to provide you,” Weblog232 replied. 

If at all, there has been a recent assassination attempt on Capt. Ibrahim Traore, it would have been reported by credible news agencies. 

Conclusion

DUBAWA’s investigation found no evidence of a recent assassination attempt on Capt. Ibrahim Traore as of May 26, 2025.
