False! Viktor Gyokeres has not joined Manchester United

Full Text

A Facebook page named Mason Mount Fans recently claimed that Viktor Gyökeres, the Swedish striker playing for Sporting Lisbon, is en route to London for a medical with Manchester United following a £60 million transfer agreement. This assertion has gained traction on social media, prompting discussions among football enthusiasts.

Viktor Gyökeres is a Swedish professional footballer born in Stockholm on June 4, 1998. Standing at 1.89 meters, he plays as a striker and is currently signed with Sporting CP in Portugal. In 2023, Gyökeres transferred to Sporting CP for a club-record fee. Since then, he has been instrumental in the team’s success, scoring 68 goals in 66 appearances. His contributions have helped Sporting CP secure back-to-back Primeira Liga titles in the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons.

It is vital to fact-check this claim because it has the potential to mislead people, particularly fans of the two clubs.

Verification

DUBAWA consulted official statements and reputable sports news outlets. We checked Fabrizio Romano’s page to verify the claim, as the claimant had mentioned. However, there is nothing about Viktor Gyokeres undergoing a Manchester United medical.

Sporting Lisbon’s Official Position:

Francisco Salgado Zenha, the vice-president of Sporting Lisbon, addressed transfer speculations surrounding Viktor Gyökeres. He stated:

“Currently, there are no formal offers for the player, and his contract with the club still has three years remaining.”

This statement indicates that, as of now, no official negotiations or agreements have been made regarding Gyökeres’s transfer.

Sporting Lisbon’s Transfer Stance

According to reports from The Guardian, Sporting CP has informed interested clubs, including Arsenal, that striker Viktor Gyökeres will not be sold for less than €80 million (£67 million). However, this is below his €100 million release clause.

Statements from Viktor Gyokeres

When questioned about potential transfers, Gyökeres responded after winning the Portugal league title with Sporting Lisbon:

“It’s football, I’m still here. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Nobody can predict the future. I’m very happy, it was a game that went well for us. Very happy to score and win.”

This suggests that Gyökeres is currently focused on his tenure with Sporting Lisbon and is not actively pursuing a transfer.

Lack of Reports from Reputable Sports Journalists:

Notably, prominent sports journalists and platforms such as Sky Sports and BBC Sport have not reported any agreement or medical examination involving Viktor Gyökeres and Manchester United. The absence of such reports further undermines the credibility of the claim.

Conclusion

The claim that Viktor Gyökeres is undergoing a medical with Manchester United following a £60 million deal is unsubstantiated. Official statements from Sporting Lisbon’s vice-president, the player’s comments, and the lack of reports from reputable sports news outlets indicate that no such transfer is underway. Therefore, the assertion made by the “Mason Mount Fans” Facebook page is false.
