Misleading! Video of flooded highway, not Lagos

Verdict: Misleading! The video of a flooded expressway is from Banani, an area in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Full Text

Recently, heavy rainfall in different parts of Lagos State displaced many residents across the city, leaving motorists stranded after their vehicles were submerged and damaged in the flood.

The Guardian further reported that the situation, which forced many businesses to close, has brewed fresh concerns over the state’s drainage infrastructure, waste management and flood control measures.

Against this backdrop, an X user, @Iamscrummy, claimed in a now-deleted post that the Lekki area of Lagos State is currently experiencing flooding.

“Situation report: Lekki, Lagos,” the claimant captioned the video.

As of Wednesday, Jul. 15, 2026, the video had earned over 730,000 views, 485 comments, 800 reposts, 2,000 likes, and 720 bookmarks.

In the comment section, some users believed the post, while others doubted the claim’s authenticity.

An X user, @Bentemisonn, said, “Y’all should continue to push the Atlantic Ocean back very well.”

Another user, @Benzonkartelrec, queried, “What’s President Bola Tinubu doing about this?”

Expressing disbelief, @Evelyn_pealyn wrote, “Where in Lekki is this? I have never seen this place.”

@Fagbamigbealaba noted: “[It is a] a lie. Where in Lagos?”

Due to the high level of engagement and the conflicting reactions from users under the post, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.

Verification

DUBAWA conducted keyword searches but found no report of a similar flood situation in Lekki.

We thereafter divided the claimant’s video into keyframes and used them to conduct a Google Reverse Image Search. This led us to a YouTube video published on July 12, 2026.

It was footage of a flooded highway near Banani Sea Beach. We conducted a keyword search about the flooding situation in the mentioned area.

An Instagram handle, Cablgram, shared a similar video of the Banani expressway submerged in flood, and stated that heavy rainfall had caused waterlogging.

The Daily Star reported that the deluge disrupted traffic on the expressway due to continuous rainfall.

Banani Sea Beach is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Bangladesh was reported to have witnessed a “week of floodwaters” that had killed 51 people in southern Bangladesh and could be worse.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) also reported a similar story.

Conclusion

The image is misleading. The image used to represent the Lagos flood is from Banani, Bangladesh.
