Claim: A Facebook user shared a video describing it as a scene where Sokoto residents marched to the Sultan’s residence to clamour for the replacement of President Bola Tinubu with Peter Obi.
Verdict: Misleading. Though the clip used is real, the narrative attached to it is untrue. The video is from the 2024 #EndBadGovernance protest in Sokoto, where protesters marched to the Sultan’s palace to express their grievances over hardship and called for a military takeover.

In response to various challenges and the quest for justice and change, citizens in different countries often resort to organised protests to demand change. During such protests, demonstrators may march with placards and chant messages that reflect their demands. Nigeria has witnessed several notable protests over the years, including the 2020 #EndSARS protest and the 2024 #EndBadGovernance protest.
Still on the topic of protests, a Facebook user, @Chummy Television, shared a video showing a crowd of people and claimed (archived here) that they are the people of Sokoto who went to the Sultan’s house to demand that Tinubu step down and allow Peter Obi to take over.
The 2-minute 20-second video showed a woman describing a separate video attached beneath hers, which showed a crowd of people. She explained, “The people of Sokoto marched to the house of the Sultan of Sokoto to tell him that if Peter Obi will not rule Nigeria, then let the military take over.”
She repeated the statement three times, then digressed to update her followers on a separate topic about the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, before encouraging them to like and share the post.
The caption attached to the post read, “Sokoto indigenes march to the Sultan of Sokoto’s palace to demand Tinubu’s resignation and Peter Obi’s takeover.”
As of Sept. 7, 2026, when DUBAWA last viewed the post, it had garnered 16,000 likes, over 1,000 comments, 6,000 shares, and 2 million views.
We checked the comments to see what users thought.
@Ikedichi Ugwu wrote, “Which one do we believe? There is a gang up against Obi from the north.”
@Adazion Ngozi said, “Abeg let them divide this contraption.”
@Getrude Chukwu asked, “Then if the military takes over, are the bandits ruling?”

Given the claim’s sensitive political undertone and its potential to shape public opinion if left unverified, DUBAWA decided to investigate its veracity.
Verification
DUBAWA searched the web using keywords from the claim to establish whether any recent reports corroborated a fresh protest at the Sultan of Sokoto’s palace. We found no credible report of a 2026 gathering at the palace where protesters demanded Tinubu’s resignation in favour of Peter Obi.
We then extracted keyframes from the video using InVID and conducted a reverse image search. The search returned several Facebook posts featuring the same footage dating back to 2024. This raised the need to establish the original context rather than relying on the narrative attached to the recent post.
Our findings showed that the footage is from the #EndBadGovernance protests that took place across Nigeria in August 2024 over economic hardship and the rising cost of living.
A report published by Arise News on Aug. 1, 2024, established that protesters had stormed the Sultan’s palace in Sokoto during the demonstrations. The protesters demanded an end to insecurity, hunger and bad governance. The report made no mention of Peter Obi or any demand for President Bola Tinubu to hand over power to him.
A Tribune Online report published on Aug. 6, 2024, also provided further context to the footage. The report said protesters who invaded the Sultan of Sokoto’s palace during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations called for military intervention. It referenced the chant “Sojaji muke so”, which translates to “Soldiers take over.”
The real context therefore differs from the claim now attached to the video, which presents the crowd as demanding that Peter Obi take over from Tinubu.
Taken together, the reverse image search and reports published during the 2024 protests show that the footage predates the current claim and is linked to the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations in Sokoto.
DUBAWA additionally found a PRNigeria fact-check published in September 2024 on the same incident. The resurfacing of the footage in 2026 therefore presents an old protest in a new context.
Conclusion
The video circulating on Facebook does not show Sokoto indigenes recently marching to the Sultan’s palace to demand President Bola Tinubu’s resignation in favour of Peter Obi. The footage dates to the 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests, when demonstrators stormed the Sultan’s palace over issues including hunger, insecurity and bad governance. Hence, the claim is misleading.
