Former Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, Chidimma Adetshina, has been embroiled in deportation battles after she appeared before the Cape Town Regional Court to contest the Department of Home Affairs’ efforts to deport her from South Africa forcefully.
Against this backdrop, an X user, @Phislash, on Saturday, Jul. 18, 2026, shared a video (archived here) of mass protesters allegedly clamouring for Chidinma to return the Miss Universe crown after she left Nigeria and chose to stay in South Africa.
The video was captioned, “Apparently the Nigerians are marching in the streets against Chidimma. She scammed them off the title of Miss Nigeria, but she’s busy fighting to avoid being deported from South Africa.”
Similar video claims were also shared on Facebook and TikTok, respectively.
As of Monday, Jul. 20, 2026, the video has amassed over 250,000 views, 3,280 likes, 84 quotes, 987 reposts, and 566 bookmarks.
Most of the comments under the post mocked Nigerians, and none questioned the video’s authenticity.
One comment by @Tsipambo reads, “She served them right because they were blaming South Africa.”
Another user, @Glan-Mayimele, said, “I completely understand why she doesn’t want to live in Nigeria; even their president doesn’t live there.”
Also, @Silntscrol29765 stated, “If only they marched like this against their bad leadership, not some title that’s not gonna serve them nothing.”
Considering the controversy surrounding Chidimma’s deportation and current hostilities between Nigeria and South Africa, DUBAWA decided to verify the post.
Verification
DUBAWA submitted the clip to Google Reverse Image Search, which returned results for videos on Instagram, Facebook, and X similar to the claimant’s.
The posts, shared in 2023, all mentioned that the video showcased disgruntled protesters clamouring for justice on behalf of the demised singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, who died in unclear circumstances.
DUBAWA conducted keyword searches for news reports related to the situation. Premium Times in 2023 shared similar pictures and reported that youth had gathered en masse to stage a peaceful protest in Abeokuta for justice in respect of Mohbad’s untimely death.
Channels Television also reported how youth, clad in black shirts, rallied in different parts of the city of Abeokuta, demanding a thorough probe into the singer’s sudden death.
Furthermore, we checked whether there were any protests in Nigeria over Chidimma’s decision to remain in South Africa, but found no related reports.
Conclusion
DUBAWA’s findings indicate that the video is old and unrelated to Chidimma’s recent deportation issue in South Africa. The claim is therefore misleading.
