Claim: An X user shared a video claiming to be the aftermath of an attack in Nigeria.
Verdict: Misleading! The footage was captured in the aftermath of a civil war crisis in Sudan, not Nigeria.

Over the years, Nigeria has witnessed continuous attacks by terrorist groups, which have claimed the lives of many in the country.
Recently, an X user @SadiqMaunde shared a video (archived here) showing the carnage caused by terrorism in a deserted Nigerian town.
“This isn’t Afghanistan, Syria, or the movies. This is our reality now in this country under the APC,” the claimant wrote, referencing the ravaged area as Nigeria.
Similar posts were shared on Facebook, as seen here, here, and here.
As of Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, the video has generated over 215,000 views, 4,200 likes, 2,400 reposts, 586 bookmarks, and has been quoted 140 times.
While other X users in the comments criticised the Federal Government for enabling the security crisis, others questioned the post’s accuracy.
“Sadly, the reality, in 12 years of this administration from 2015 till now, insecurity is worsening!…, @Topmanlamb wrote.
Another comment by @Imnottgaius reads, “Sadly we don’t see this on the news.”
Meanwhile, @Bosas38 stated, “Trees planted in the middle of the road just gave this away as fake.”
Given the sensitive nature of the claim amidst security concerns, its high engagement statistics and virality, DUBAWA decided to verify its authenticity.
Verification
DUBAWA conducted a Google Reverse Image search on the clip, and it linked us to an Instagram video uploaded on Aug. 18, 2026.
The post explained that the video was filmed in a ghost town in Al-Fashir, Sudan, after years of devastating fighting between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which has displaced thousands of people.
“At least 59,000 people have been killed directly by the fighting, while the true death toll is believed to be far higher-potentially reaching hundreds of thousands when deaths from hunger, disease, and the collapse of healthcare are included,” part of the post read.
Further inquiries linked us to similar videos on Facebook here and here, which referenced the crisis in Sudan.
We found a report published by JINHA, a women’s news agency, on Aug. 4, 2026, reporting the aftermath of the Sudan crisis. It mentions how anxiety looms in several areas of Sudan over several cases of massacres attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as fighting continues and protection levels for civilians decline.
In a recent Al Jazeera report, it was disclosed that thousands of families have fled to Sudan’s North Kordofan capital in the latest wave of displacement after the RSF attacked villages in the region.
The United Nations also recently reported that fighting in Sudan has displaced at least another 200,000 people since late 2025.
Conclusion
DUBAWA’s investigation reveals that the video was filmed in Sudan and not Nigeria. Therefore, the claim is misleading.
