Claim: World’s largest flag unveiled in Ibadan
The claim that the flag unveiled in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, covering an area 3,275 meters, is the largest in the world, is false.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor; the designer of the Nigerian flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, members of his family, close friends and country music idol, Timi Dakolo on Thursday June 24, 2021 unveiled what was reported as the world’s largest flag at the Polo ground in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Akinkunmi while welcoming guests to the event, expressed happiness that he is being honoured while alive. “I have always dreamt about Nigeria being at the forefront of every good thing,” he said.
Pa Akinkunmi designed the Nigerian flag in October 1959 when he was barely 23. Akinkunmi, now 85 said the journey to creating Nigeria’s national flag started when he was studying Electrical Engineering at Norwood Technical College in London.

To verify this claim which was published in many other dailies like Tribune, This Day, Guardian among others in Nigeria, Dubawa visited the website of the Guinness world record to search for the world’s largest flag.
The Gulf state of Qatar created the world’s largest flag as part of festivities to mark its national day on 17 December 2013.
The maroon and white flag was draped over an area of 101,978 sq m – the size of 14 football pitches – in an industrial zone north of Doha.
It weighs 9.8 tonnes and was stitched from three plane-loads of material, according to the al-Sharq newspaper.
The flag broke the record of 79,000 sq m, set in Romania in May of the same year.
Further findings from a story show that the largest flag ever flown measures approximately 2,448.6 square meters and was achieved by Trident Support Flagpoles and Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (both UAE) in Sharjah, United Arab Emirate, in 2017.
A Dubai based news website Zawiya ( a leading source of regional news and intelligence, serving millions of professionals from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt) also corroborates the claims with a report on its website celebrating the milestone.

The attempt happened to show appreciation for the United Arab Emirates during the 2017 flag day celebration.

Further findings revealed news about Shrajah’s iconic tourist destination, the Flag Island, where the world’s largest flag was successfully hoisted on a 123 meter- high pole, which was named the world’s 7th tallest during the opening on the 2nd of December 2012.
It entered the Guinness World Records when the flag was unveiled as part of the spectacular national festivities organised by the island in 2017 as part of the nationwide Flag Day celebrations.
