For a while now, there have been concerns that Africa, as a continent, should consider moving away from foreign assistance, since it is no longer under colonial rule. While agitators say this assistance strips African countries of autonomy and allows foreign entities to determine national policies, others argue that a lack of support would put an end to critical development projects.
Amid this, an X user, @Millishield01, alleged in a post (archived here) that the Ibrahim Traore-led administration in Burkina Faso has constructed a dam without any foreign assistance.
The user said the dam was built without support from the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund.
“Ibrahim Traoré built a 1.1 million m³ dam in 8 months with Burkina Faso’s own money. No World Bank, no IMF,” he captioned the post.
As of Aug. 2, 2026, the video had garnered over 200,000 views, 5,000 likes, 190 comments, and 240 bookmarks.
A review of the comment section under the post showed that users were divided over its authenticity.
For instance, @SharronL46752 wrote, “I love this president; he is confident in himself. You have a big point, brother. Imagine Nigeria getting a visa and they [will] be very happy to run out of the country.”
Another user, @IamTeetuz said, “And some useless slaves we still be defending the monster APC government.”
Meanwhile, @OlusolaEsan1 responded, saying, “You lie! Burkina Faso still dey collect from both the IMF and the World Bank till tomorrow.”

Verification
On July 25, 2026, the Burkinabè military ruler Traoré inaugurated the 1.1-million-cubic-meter Po Kapro dam project in the Nazinon region of the nation.
To begin with, DUBAWA conducted multiple keyword searches to determine whether Burkina Faso built the long-awaited dam solely with internal resources but found no supporting information.
Instead, our search led to a 2024 World Bank water security project in Burkina Faso.
We reviewed the project document and found it revealed that 35 priority dams will be constructed with that financing in the country, but this list does not specifically name Po Kapro.
Finally, we checked whether Burkina Faso has received funding from the IMF or the World Bank since Traore’s military intervention in 2022.
In a press statement seen on its official website on June 14, 2024, the IMF stated, “The Board also completed the First Review of the 48-month Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement, approved on Sept. 21, 2023. The approval of the first review enables the immediate disbursement of about US$ 31.7 million (SDR 24.08 million), bringing total IMF financial support under the arrangement to about US$ 63.4 million (SDR 48.16 million).”
Similarly, we found that on Sept. 19, 2024, the World Bank confirmed it approved a $100.4 million Human Capital Protection Project to support the government’s efforts to deliver basic social services in Burkina Faso.
Conclusion
There is no evidence to support the claim that Traore built the Po Kapro dam without the assistance of the World Bank and the IMF. Available evidence, however, indicates that Burkina Faso currently holds loans from both financial institutions.
