Old video of Lagos police operation shared as recent terrorists' arrest

Verdict: Misleading. The video shows a police operation involving a truck carrying military camouflage uniforms and suspected illicit substances. Still, there is no evidence that the suspects were terrorists or that ammunition was recovered from them.

On July 25, 2026, a Facebook page, Baba Lamidi TV, posted a video here, claiming that the police caught terrorists who smuggled ammunition.

In the video (archive here), a man speaking in Yoruba claimed that the secret activities of terrorists who wanted to smuggle ammunition for war had been exposed in Lagos. He also claimed that military uniforms and different types of guns were recovered from them.

He said, “The secret of terrorists who want to smuggle in ammunition for war has been revealed in Lagos. Soldier uniforms and guns in different forms were collected from them. There’s a problem in this country. Please share this video so that other states will be aware.”

As of Aug. 7, 2026, the post had garnered over 1,800 shares, 102 comments and 2,200 likes. The video was also reposted by other Facebook users, here, here, here, and here

Some users expressed concern about the recurring cycle of attacks and reprisals, while others called for calm and accountability for those responsible.

Adetola Adeleke Adediran said, “God will always expose them.”

Ololade Olayinka Oluwasegun said, “They want to use it for election.”

Ajekiigbe Timothy Olukayode said, “These notorious [people] are to be eliminated in our society as a scapegoat to others.”

Ayoola Isaiah said, “Nigeria, we are fully in danger. Many of these have entered from the North. There’s a plan to turn the country into a Muslim country. How can we know the real soldiers or police now?”

DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim because the video could incite fear and unrest, especially amid prevailing security concerns in Nigeria.

Verification

DUBAWA conducted a reverse image search on screenshots from the video to establish the footage’s origin and context.

The search revealed that the video was not recent and did not show terrorists being arrested for smuggling ammunition. The footage was first published online on June 23, 2026, following a police operation in Lagos. TheCable, AriseTV and PremiumTimes reported that operatives intercepted a large MAN truck at Apongbon Market on Lagos Island.

According to the reports, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Lagos State Police Command, Fatai Tijani, disclosed that the command’s operation led to the recovery of an unregistered MAN diesel truck loaded with 47 sacks containing military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of drugs suspected to be illicit substances. The police commissioner said a preliminary investigation revealed that the truck was allegedly being used to transport military camouflage uniforms to the eastern part of the country.

He also said the investigation was ongoing to determine the source, ownership, and intended recipients of the recovered items; establish the extent of the suspects’ involvement; and identify other persons connected with the act.

However, the police statement did not mention that those arrested were terrorists, as claimed in the Facebook post, or that they were caught with ammunition.

Conclusion

The claim that the video shows terrorists who were caught by the police while smuggling ammunition is misleading. DUBAWA found that the footage relates to a June 23, 2026, police operation in Lagos involving the interception of a truck carrying military camouflage uniforms and suspected illicit substances. The police did not state that the suspects were terrorists or that ammunition was recovered from them.
