Claim: A Facebook user shared a video of Obi advertising an investment scheme.

Verdict: False. The original video was a Channels TV interview, but there was no mention of the said investment scheme.

Full Text

Peter Obi is a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political scene. His public visibility extends across political commentary, news coverage, and social media discourse.

In such a highly charged information environment, prominent political figures often become frequent reference points in both accurate reporting and distorted narratives.

This visibility also makes them more susceptible to being featured in misleading content, including misquoted statements, out-of-context clips, and manipulated or falsely attributed media. DUBAWA has debunked some of these narratives here, here, and here

Recently, a Facebook user, Nigeria Daily Bulletin, shared a video showing Obi advertising an investment scheme (archived here) in which Nigerians are required to pay N350,000 to get N4.5 million within one month.

The caption attached to the post reads, “Peter Obi opens access to structured income for Nigerians. Every citizen who starts with N350,000 can reach up to N4.5 million within the first month.”

In the clip, Obi appears in an interview with Channels TV political correspondent Seun Okinbaloye. He is heard saying:

“I am hoping that everyone who sees this message reaches everyone, but those who do will understand that opportunities like these are not given to everyone at once. With a starting investment of 350,000 naira, one can get 4.5 million in a month. This access is limited. Once the opportunity closes, there will not be an opportunity. This process works on phones and laptops; something people use every day.”

As the recording continues, Obi reiterates the importance of joining the investment scheme, saying it could yield millions of naira for participants. He also adds that if the scheme does not work, the initial N350,000 invested will be refunded.

As of May 19, 2026, the post had 85 likes, 14 comments, and 1,000 views.

We checked the comments to see what other users thought about the claim.

@Edikan Etim asked, “Link please?”

@Chima Uzorh replied, “Is this real? If you are using Obi to convince the public, it won’t sell.”

@Eze Peter Obum, who seemed very convinced, added, “They are scammers”

The same claim was also found here, here, and here.

DUBAWA also found a link attached to the post, which led to a website. Unlike the original Channels TV page, this website displayed a lengthy report of Obi’s interview with a Channels Television journalist, while still promoting the alleged investment scheme.

The probability that Obi would promote an investment scheme is unlikely. Also, the frequency with which DUBAWA has debunked similar false narratives made DUBAWA investigate the claim.

Verification

Though the voice sounded similar to Obi’s, DUBAWA identified several inconsistencies in the video. First, the lip movements did not sync with the audio. While the body movements appeared natural, the lip motion again seemed disconnected from the face.

Knowing this is common with altered videos, DUBAWA subjected the video to Deepware.ai to analyse it. Deepware’s results indicate that the footage was suspicious.

We also used Hive.ai to analyse the video. The result showed that the image is AI-generated.

DUBAWA proceeded to conduct an Error Level Analysis (ELA) with a screenshot from the video, and it returned with patches on the image. This is usually an indication that the image has been altered from its original form.

We also used a key frame from the video to trace its source. Our search led to a video shared on the official YouTube page of Channels TV. Wearing the same outfit and making similar gestures, Obi was seen responding to questions from Seun Okinbaloye on how he planned to tackle security issues in the country if elected president. Throughout the interview, there was no mention of any advertising scheme promising to enrich Nigerians.

Even more importantly, DUBAWA copied the link to the website attached to the Facebook post and conducted a domain search to find details about it. The search showed that it was registered on April 1, 2026, updated on April 6, 2026, and is set to expire on April 1, 2027. This shows the website was recently created with no established history linked to Channels Television.

The website was registered through NameCheap, Inc. and uses Cloudflare name servers. The online platform conceals its ownership through a privacy service, with no evidence connecting it to Channels Television.

Conclusion

DUBAWA’s verification shows that the video is manipulated and falsely attributed to Obi. The original Channels TV interview contains no investment scheme, and technical checks confirm the content was altered. The claim is, therefore, false.
