Claim: An Instagram user posted a now-deleted video allegedly showing Nigerians scampering around for food off a pickup vehicle.

Verdict: Misleading! The video in question is unconnected to Nigeria. Our investigation shows that the footage was filmed in Côte d’Ivoire, and the people in the video speak French.

As of December 2024 alone, three stampedes occurred in Nigeria from charity events and left at least 67 people dead, many of which were children. As families struggle to put meals on the table with the country’s high cost-of-living crisis, people resort to these freebies to feed themselves.
Against this backdrop, an Instagram user, @Naija_Today__, claimed via a now-deleted video that Nigerian citizens are running around for food as hunger bites harder in the nation.
“Hungry in the land of Nigeria,” the claimant captioned the clip.
In the attached video, men and women could be seen being chased with a belt by a police officer after they excitedly rushed to a pickup vehicle carrying some food.
Due to the doubtful contextual background of the video, DUBAWA decided to verify the assertion.
Verification
We ran a keyword search on Google to determine if there was a recent report from credible news outlets about police chasing locals in Nigeria over food but found no supporting information.
DUBAWA observed that the police van had an inscription that read d’Adjamé. We ran keyword searches on Google and confirmed that Adjamé is a neighbourhood in Abidjan, the metropolitan capital of Côte d’Ivoire.
Finally, we shared our findings with a local journalist who spoke anonymously because of his organisation’s policy. He confirmed that the clip was shot in Cote d’Ivoire and that the language in the video is French, the country’s national language. However, he could not accurately pinpoint the exact incident that triggered the situation in the video.
DUBAWA contacted other local journalists to determine the video’s context, but they could not provide any information.
Conclusion
The claim is misleading as the footage was traced to Côte d’Ivoire, not Nigeria. Besides, no credible media platform in Nigeria reported such a development.
