On May 15, 2026, armed terrorists stormed three schools in Orire Local Government of Oyo State, killed an assistant headmaster, abducted many pupils and teachers, and left the entire community in sorrow and chaos.
The incident has triggered public outcry and clamour for the government to rescue the victims. Meanwhile, fear and panic continue to be the order of the day, as security forces, including community vigilantes, round up individuals suspected to be bandits hiding in bushes.
In the aftermath of the incident, an X user, @AJSMILE911, shared a video (archived here) of some secondary school students fleeing from school in Kano State after gunmen invaded the school and abducted the principal and some students.
“Happening now in Kano State. Unknown gunmen reportedly stormed a government school and abducted the principal alongside an unknown number of students,” the X user wrote.
A similar claim was shared on Facebook here. As of Friday, June 5, 2026, the post has garnered 331,000 views, 601 comments, 2,700 retweets, 3,700 likes, and 373 bookmarks.
Reacting to the claim, some X users registered their fears over the insecurity situation in the country, while others pointed out that the incident did not occur in Kano.
“This better not be true. Nigeria is under invasion,” @Kingstonpk commented.
“They are speaking Yoruba in the background, and you are saying this is Kano,” @s_a_ashraf argued.
“This is fake naw,” thatgirloyin321 wrote.
To forestall fear and panic and prevent disinformation, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA extracted several keyframes from the video and submitted them to Google Reverse Image Search. It linked us to a similar Facebook clip of students running, and a woman shouting in the Yoruba language that some set of people were spreading fake news about a terrorist invasion.
Although we could not identify the exact location where the pandemonium occurred, keyword searches indicated that some schools in Akure, Ondo State, closed down over bandit attacks. These Facebook posts can be found here, here, and here.
Meanwhile, Punch newspaper reported that the Ondo State Police Command reassured the residents of Odigbo Local Government Area and the general public that there was no terrorist threat or breach of security in the town.
DUBAWA also noticed that, contrary to the cultural setting in most Northern States in Nigeria, none of the girls in the video wore a hijab.

Furthermore, we conducted a keyword search about the alleged incident in Kano, but found no related information.
Conclusion
The claim is misleading. While we could not confirm the location of the incident, available evidence shows it is not from Kano state. Moreover, no reputable news outlet reported such an incident.
