Claim: Social media users in Sokoto and Kebbi states reported seeing a missile-like object pass through the night sky.

Verdict: Misleading. Findings by DUBAWA suggest the bright streaks seen across the sky were most likely meteor activity associated with the Eta Aquariids meteor shower, not a missile incident.
Full Text
On April 27, 2026, around 11 P.M, residents across parts of Sokoto and Kebbi State took to social media to say they had witnessed a strange, bright object moving rapidly across the night sky.
Many users described the object as resembling a missile or rocket.
The incident quickly generated fear, partly because of growing insecurity concerns and heightened public sensitivity to aerial military activity following the widely discussed United States airstrike in Sokoto in December 2025.
Similar claims also emerged from residents in Kebbi, where users shared photographs and videos of the unusual light formation.
Part of the Facebook post reads, “BREAKING: Panic in Birnin Kebbi as ‘Missile-Like’ Light Streaks Across Night Sky!.”
Given the panic generated by the claims, DUBAWA investigated what residents actually saw.
Verification
DUBAWA first contacted security authorities in both Sokoto State and Kebbi State to verify whether any missile-related incident or explosion had occurred.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Sokoto State, Ahmad Rufa’i, told DUBAWA that there was no report of any missile incident, aerial attack or explosion anywhere in the state.
Similarly, police authorities in Kebbi State, through the Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, dismissed claims that any missile-like object had crashed or exploded in the state.
To further verify the claims, DUBAWA conducted Google keyword searches and found no credible reports of missile launches, explosions or aerial attacks in either Sokoto or Kebbi states.
DUBAWA then reviewed photographs and videos shared by users across WhatsApp and X.
The images showed a bright streak of light moving across the night sky with a glowing tail — a pattern commonly associated with meteors or fireballs entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
Meteor shower possibility
After examining the timing and appearance of the object, DUBAWA found that the sightings coincided with the active period of the Eta Aquariids meteor shower.
Astronomical data indicate that the Eta Aquariids meteor shower is active from April 19 to May 28, 2026.
According to the American Meteor Society, the Eta Aquariids are known for producing fast-moving meteors with long glowing trails across the sky.
The society explains, “these are swift meteors that produce a high percentage of persistent trains…”
When Earth passes through the comet’s debris field, tiny particles enter the atmosphere at extremely high speeds, burning brightly and producing visible streaks of light.
Why was it visible in Sokoto and Kebbi?
The Eta Aquariids are often more visible in tropical and near-equatorial regions because of their radiant position in the sky.
Nigeria’s Northern states, including Sokoto and Kebbi, fall within favourable viewing regions where parts of the meteor shower can be observed under clear weather conditions.
The largely clear skies and low cloud cover across Northwestern Nigeria during the dry season also increase visibility of astronomical events.
This likely explains why residents across multiple locations observed the same bright object moving across the sky at the same time.
Conclusion
The viral claim that residents in Sokoto and Kebbi witnessed a missile crossing the sky is misleading.
