Claim: A viral Instagram reel suggests that Apple’s newly released iPhone 17 Pro Max has a rear camera that shifts or moves. It also claims the device houses an additional hidden camera at the back.
Verdict: False. Apple’s official specs and multiple trusted tech reviews confirm the iPhone 17 Pro Max uses fixed tetraprism optics and 3D sensor-shift stabilisation with no shifting or hidden rear camera.

Apple has remained a dominant force in the smartphone industry, with each new iPhone release introducing features that often set trends for the market.
From the iPhone 5, which had a slimmer design, to the iPhone X, which introduced Face ID, Apple has consistently raised the bar.
With the iPhone 16, improvements like better battery life and AI integration further strengthened its reputation for innovation.
On Sept. 9, 2025, the company officially launched its latest flagship, the iPhone 17 series, which includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Soon after the launch, social media was flooded with videos and reels showcasing supposed new features of the device.
Prior to the official launch, an Instagram user, bykovfx, shared a video on Sept. 3, 2025. The clip claimed that the iPhone 17 Pro Max has a shifting rear camera and an extra hidden back camera.
The post went viral, gaining over 2.2 million views, 14,500 comments, 2.8 million shares, and 29,900 reposts as of Sept. 12, 2025
While some users, like arminta, appeared convinced and commented, “Ohhh yup, I have to get this,” others dismissed it as false. For example, rangerrayne wrote, “Don’t spread misinformation.”
Given the post’s wide reach and potential to mislead, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA reviewed Apple’s official website and press release detailing the iPhone 17 Pro Max specifications. According to Apple, the device comes with a triple 48MP Fusion camera system: a 48MP Main (24mm / 2×zoom), a 48MP Ultra-Wide (13mm), and a 48MP Telephoto (100mm with 4×zoom and 200mm with 8×zoom using tetraprism design).
There is no mention of a shifting or movable rear camera. Instead, Apple explains that its new tetraprism optics allow up to 8× optical zoom without moving lens parts. The phone also supports 3D sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, stabilising the camera sensor to reduce blur. Apple’s design now features a wide horizontal camera plateau instead of the usual bump.
Trusted tech outlets such as The Verge, Wired, Tom’s Guide, and TechRadar also covered the launch extensively. None of their reports mentioned a shifting lens or hidden back camera; they confirmed Apple’s new horizontal triple-lens design.
Checks on Apple’s official product images further show no extra or hidden camera at the back. The only front-facing camera is the 18MP Centre Stage camera located in the display.
This shows that the Instagram reel was likely a digitally altered video or concept design, not a feature of the actual iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Conclusion
The claim that the iPhone 17 Pro Max features a shifting rear camera and an extra hidden back camera is false. Apple’s official specifications and credible tech reviews confirm that the device only comes with a triple 48MP Fusion camera system and an 18MP front-facing camera.
