A social media blog named ‘Shine Liberia’ claimed that the Liberia Petroleum Refinery Company’s management, led by Amos Tweh, purchased a 21-seater bus for $165,000.

The blog stated that the bus is intended for LPRC Oilers, the company’s football team. Shine Liberia alleged, “Amos Tweh reportedly brags about spending 165k USD of the Liberian people’s money to purchase this bus for LPRC Oilers FC.”

The accusation on social media attracted numerous comments, with some users believing the post. For instance, Junior B. Zuu wrote, “MD and his team did not do well at all.”

Similarly, Mark Kannah remarked, “Corruption now runs in the veins of almost every normal government official in Liberia,” adding, “Lord, please have mercy and save Liberia.” The post received about 185 comments, two shares, and many more Facebook emoji reactions.

Given the seriousness of the claim and its potential impact, DUBAWA decided to fact-check and clarify the truth behind the post.

Verification

DUBAWA contacted Shine Liberia to authenticate its claim. However, the researcher did not get a response.

The researcher then contacted the Chairman of the Oilers Sports Association, Momolu Dukuly (no relation to the writer), to ask how much it cost the Association to buy the bus. Mr Dukuly shared a receipt showing the cost of the bus.

Receipt for the cost of the bus

To clarify the matter, the researcher also contacted Mr Amos Tweh, the Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refinery Company (LPRC).

He said that the bus was not acquired by LPRC management but by the Oilers Sports Association, with funds received from the sale of a player to a European club.

“Oilers Sports Association decided to buy a minibus. It is the first of its kind for the players to get a bus for themselves. We intend to improve their benefits for them in the next fiscal year’s budget,” Tweh clarified,

Tweh’s statement was corroborated by the Oilers Sports Association, which stated that the new bus, commissioned by Amos Tweh, was purchased with funds from the sale of one of the Oilers’ players, Sampson Dweh, to FC Viktoria Plzen for $155,412.66.

According to the agreement, the Oilers received $97,132.66, while Mr Dweh’s agent received $58,280.00. The Oilers Sports Association also provided a receipt detailing the bus purchase.

Conclusion

Based on our investigation, the claim by Shine Liberia is false and lacks any substance.
