A Facebook user shared a video of the Nigerian singer Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, who was heard encouraging Liberians to attend a vocational training programme.

“I, Burna Boy from Africa. I am encouraging every Liberian to attend the 4Life Zoe Vocational Training programme orientation… take advantage of all the training offered. Not everyone will do music, but make sure to do something,” the singer, whose stage name is Burna Boy, said.

The Facebook post on March 7, 2024, has received over 1,033 views, 32 comments, 95 likes, and 16 shares.

DUBAWA decided to fact-check the video as part of its campaign against misinformation and disinformation in Liberia.

Verification

A Google Reverse Image Search conducted by DUBAWA showed the video posted by the Facebook user had been manipulated.

The doctored video came from a 2022 interview the singer granted to the English comedian and presenter Amelia Dimoldenberg in a series called Chicken Shop Date.

In the series Chicken Shop Date, the comedian interviews celebrities in restaurants and asks questions about their music career.

Also, the video was viewed using a verification tool, InVid, which showed the movement of the singer’s mouth and the voice lacked coordination. The tool revealed this is a sign that another person has tampered with the video.

When DUBAWA contacted the Facebook user about the post, he has since not responded to the inquiry.

Conclusion

It is, therefore, not true that Nigerian singer Burna Boy urged Liberians to attend a vocational training programme in the country.

The researcher produced this fact-check under the DUBAWA 2024 Kwame KariKari Fellowship, in partnership with Prime FM 105.5 Liberia, to facilitate the spirit of “truth” in journalism and enhance media literacy.
