Nigerians have been in uproar and agitation, using their social media accounts to voice their opinions ahead of today’s protest. This has resulted in the disseminating of misleading videos, fact-checked by DUBAWA as seen here and here.
A Facebook user (Eagle Media TV Nigeria) posted a video showing burning tyres on a street on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, claiming it was a recent incident in Ikenne ahead of today’s protest.
His caption reads, “Oro festival stopped by hungry and angry youths in Ogun State; protests must hold the day after tomorrow | Eagle Media TV Nigeria.”
Noticing the sensitivity of the post, DUBAWA decided to verify it.
Verification
We carried out a keyword search, showing a similar video posted on Instagram.
Probing further, DUBAWA came across credible media reports of a clash between the Ikenne youths and the state government. On Sunday, July 28, 2024, Punch reported a protest among the youths in Ikenne on Saturday. The protest occurred due to the State Government’s refusal to hold the annual Oro festival, leading to a clash between the youths and security operatives.
The report further explained that the protest aimed to ensure the festival’s celebration despite the government ban. Meanwhile, the state command has arrested 20 suspects and impounded two vehicles related to the crisis. Sahara Reporters and the Nigerian Tribune also reported similar events, as seen here and here.
Conclusion
Our findings reveal that the video posted is from a protest among Ikenne youths, not from the #EndBadGovernance protest. It is, therefore, misleading.
