In the wake of fuel subsidy removal and a hike in market prices, among other prevailing lacks in social amenities, citizens have declared an upcoming nationwide protest to express their grievances and demand that the government rethink its policies.

The upcoming nationwide protests have been announced to kick off on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024, although there have also been calls to inhibit the demonstrations with counterprotests. 

Amidst all these, a TikTok user, @salisufurniture, claims a demonstration occurred on Tuesday, Jul. 30, 2024, at one of Abuja’s metropolises, Barnex. 

“Protest in Abuja today,” the TikTok user wrote, along with the post.

The post has garnered 3,559 likes and 249 comments, was shared 248 times, and bookmarked 134 times.

Due to the tendency of the post to cause information disorder, mainly if found to be untrue, DUBAWA decided to check its authenticity.

Verification

DUBAWA subjected portions of the video scenes to Google Lens and found a similar video file posted on X on Feb. 24, 2024. According to the post, the protest was to push for Nigeria’s incumbent president, Bola Tinubu, to resign.

We also located another TikTok post, dated Feb. 19, 2024, similar to the claimant’s. 

DUBAWA also asked individuals in the area if such a protest ever happened, as claimed, and the response was negative.

Conclusion

No protest ever took place at Barnex on Tuesday, Jul. 30, 2024, as the video used dates back to Feb. 2024. Moreover, individuals in the area say nothing has happened.
